Draining and Filling

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required

Adapter (V.A.G 1274/8)

Drip Tray for VAS 6100 (VAS 6208)

Hose Clip Pliers (V.A.G 1921)

Cooling System Charge Unit (VAS 6096)

Refractometer (T10007)

Draining

Risk of scalding due to hot steam and hot coolant.

When the engine is warm the cooling system is under pressure.

Reduce pressure by covering the coolant expansion tank cap with a cloth and carefully opening.

- Open the coolant expansion tank cap.

- Remove the noise insulation.

Passat, CC, GTI and Eos:

- Remove the charge air hose clamps - items 1 and 2 - and hose and seal the charge air cooler with a clean cloth.

Collect leaking coolant in a clean container for disposal or reuse.

- Place (VAS 6208) under the engine.

- Remove the lower coolant hose - 1 - from the radiator and let the coolant drain.

- Remove lower coolant hose from after-run coolant pump (V51) - arrow - and allow the coolant to drain.

Tiguan:

- Remove the bolt - 2 - for the after-run coolant pump (V51) bracket.

The after-run coolant pump stays in the installed position.

- Remove the coolant hose - 1 -.

- Remove the lower coolant hose from the after-run coolant pump - arrow - and allow the coolant to drain.

Filling

Only use distilled water for mixing with G12 plus-plus. Using distilled water provides optimum corrosion protection.

Only use coolant additive G 12 plus-plus that conforms to TL VW 774 G.

Coolant additives with the note "conforming to TL VW 774 G" prevent frost and corrosion damage, scaling and also raise boiling point of coolant. The cooling system must be filled with coolant additive year-round.

Because of its high boiling point, the coolant improves engine reliability under heavy loads, particularly in countries with tropical climates.

Protection against frost must be assured down to approximately -25 degrees C (-13 degrees F) (in arctic climatic countries down to approximately -35 degrees C (-31 degrees F)).

The coolant concentration must not be reduced by adding water even in warmer seasons and in warmer countries. The coolant additive portion must be at least 40%.

If for climatic reasons a greater frost protection is required, the amount of coolant additive of can be increased, but only up to 60 % (frost protection to about -40 degrees C (-40 degrees F), as otherwise frost protection is reduced again and cooling effectiveness is also reduced.

(T10007) is recommended for determining freeze protection density.

If the radiator, heater core, cylinder head or cylinder head gasket are replaced, do not reuse the old coolant.

Recommended Mixture Ratios:

1 The amount of coolant may vary depending on vehicle equipment.

2 Only use clean drinking water.

- Connect the lower coolant hose - 1 - to the radiator.

- Install the charge air pipe.

- Connect the coolant hose to the after-run coolant pump - arrow -.

- Install the noise insulation.

Using (VAS 6096):

- Install (V.A.G 1274/8) onto the expansion tank.

- Fill the coolant circuit using (VAS 6096). Refer to the operating instructions for cooling system filler unit VAS 6096.

Without (VAS 6096):

- Slowly fill the coolant up to the upper mark in the hatched area on the expansion tank.

- Install the expansion tank cap.

- Start the engine and maintain an engine speed of about 2000 RPM for approximately 3 minutes.

- Allow the engine to run until the radiator fan (V7) starts running.

Hot steam may escape when opening the expansion tank cap. Wear protective goggles and protective clothing to prevent damage to eyes and scalding. Cover the cap with a cloth and open very carefully.

- Check the coolant level and add coolant if necessary. When the engine is at operating temperature, the coolant must be at the top mark. When the engine is cold, the coolant must be in the center of the hatched area.
