Battery In Luggage Compartment, Disconnecting and Connecting

Battery in Luggage Compartment, Disconnecting and Connecting

CAUTION!
Vehicles with battery in luggage compartment is equipped with a battery isolator to increase crash safety. In the event of a collision, the airbag control module triggers a separation, which disrupts the power supply wiring to the starter and to the engine electronics. The battery cut-off takes place pyrotechnically through a very small explosive charge. To prevent accidentally triggering a separation when working on the battery or battery cut-off, you must first disconnect the battery. Refer to => [ Battery, Disconnecting and Connecting ] Battery, Disconnecting and Connecting.

Observe safety precautions when working on battery isolation system.

Observe notes for disposal of battery isolator units. Refer to => [ Battery Interrupt Igniter Disposal ] Battery Interrupt Igniter Disposal.

Disconnecting

Battery is located at right of luggage compartment under formed tool kit insert and removable trailer hitch.

By disconnecting the negative battery connection (opening the circuit), it is possible to safely work on the electrical system.

Disconnection of the battery positive terminal is only required for removal of the battery.

- Turn off the ignition and all electrical consumers.

- Remove nuts - 1 - and remove tool kit formed insert.

- Remove tool kit formed insert and removable trailer hitch in sequence pictured. Raise - A -, pull - B - and remove - C -.

- Remove screws - arrows - and remove battery housing cover - 1 -.

- Removed formed insert - arrow -.

- First, disconnect battery terminal clamp of Ground (GND) wire - 2 - from battery Ground (GND) terminal.

- Then, remove battery terminal clamp of positive wire - 1 - from battery positive terminal.

Connecting

CAUTION!
Observe notes for threaded connections of battery terminals.

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required

Torque Wrench (V.A.G 1331)

CAUTION!
When disconnecting and connecting battery, the procedure must be followed as described in the repair information.

Central battery venting hose must not be kinked, closed and/or damaged. Battery acids pose health risks and are explosive. Carefully route the hose and ensure the battery can vent freely and not into inside of vehicle.

- Connect the positive wire battery terminal clamp - 1 - to the battery positive terminal and tighten the mounting bolt to the specification. Refer to=> [ Specifications ] Specifications.

- Connect battery ground line terminal - 2 - at a 45° angle on battery negative terminal.

- Tighten the mounting bolt to the specification. Refer to=> [ Specifications ] Specifications.

- Perform the work procedures in the table.

After connecting the battery and switching on the ignition, the ASR/ESP Control Lamp (K155) lights up continuously. Control lamp goes out automatically when vehicle is driven a distance straight ahead at 15 to 20 km/h. This re-activates Steering Angle Sensor (G85).
