Front Seat

• Removal and installation is described for left seat. The same instructions apply for removal and installation for the right seat.

• Removal and installation is described for the manually adjustable seat. The same instructions apply for removal and installation for the electrically adjustable seat.

Removal


Observe safety precautions for working on airbags.

- If present, remove seat drawer from seat.

- Position the seat as far up as possible using the height adjustment.

- Position seat as far forward as possible using the fore/aft adjustment.

- Remove bolts - 3 - and - 4 -.

- Position seat into the rearmost position via the fore/aft adjustment.

- Disconnect vehicle battery.

- Remove cover cap - 5 - from connector station.


Electrostatic discharges can lead to an unintended deployment of the airbag. Therefore, mechanic must electrostatic discharge him-/herself before disconnecting harness connector. This is done, for example, by briefly touching the chassis or door striker pin.

- Depending on vehicle equipment, disconnect seat wiring harnesses from connector station.

- Connect (VAS 6229) or (VAS 6281) to side airbag wiring harness - 6 -.

- Remove bolts - 1 - and - 2 -.

- Release wiring harness from its mount on floor.


If seat is to be lifted out or transported out of the vehicle, it must not be grasped by the attachments, for example, seat belt latch, lever for seat fore/aft adjustment, lever for seat height adjustment or seat trim panels in order to prevent damage.

- Reach with the right hand between backrest and seat cushion, grasp with the left hand onto forward end of seat cushion and lift seat out of vehicle.





Installation

- Lift seat through the front doors and into the vehicle.

- Insert seat into corresponding holes in floor via the centering pins on the tunnel side.

- Tighten the bolt - 1 - (40 Nm).

- Tighten the bolt - 2 - (40 Nm).


When installing seat, if a thread in mounting plate of seat crossmember was damaged, a reworking of the damaged thread is forbidden. In this case, mounting plate of seat crossmember must be replaced.

If there is damage to threads in mounting plate of seat crossmember:

- Replace the respective mounting plate of seat crossmember.

- Remove (VAS 6229).

- Engage wiring harness for side airbag - 6 - in connector station.

- Engage the remaining wiring harnesses in connector station, according to vehicle equipment.

- Secure wiring harness in mount on floor and insert cover cap - 5 - into connector station.

- If present, insert seat drawer into seat.

- Switch on ignition.


Make sure that no persons are in the vehicle.

- Connect vehicle battery.

- Position seat as far forward as possible using the fore/aft adjustment.

- Tighten the bolt - 3 - (40 Nm).

- Tighten the bolt - 4 - (40 Nm).


When installing seat, if a thread in mounting plate of seat crossmember was damaged, a reworking of the damaged thread is forbidden. In this case, mounting plate of seat crossmember must be replaced.

If there is damage to threads in mounting plate of seat crossmember:

- Replace the mounting plate for the seat crossmember.
