Selector Mechanism






Selector Mechanism

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required

Hose clamp pliers (V.A.G 1275)

Torque wrench (V.A.G 1331)

Grease (G 000 450 02)

Note radio coding for vehicles with coded radio.

When working on the selector mechanism in the engine compartment, disconnect the ground (GND) cable from the battery

If battery is to be reconnected, observe the work sequence after connecting the battery.

To replace operating cables, remove shift mechanism --> [ Selector Mechanism ] Selector Mechanism.

Do not bend operating cables.

Removing

- Check whether a coded radio is installed. If this is the case, obtain anti-theft coding.

- Disconnect battery ground (GND) cable with ignition switched off.

- Pry boot with frame for center console upward out of center console - arrows -.





- Fold boot upward and over shift knob.

- Open clamp - arrow - and pull off shift knob together with boot.





- Remove sound insulation.

- Remove center console and angled mounting bracket for center console

- Remove nuts - arrows - for selector housing.





- Remove lock washer - 3 - for shift cable from transmission shift lever - 1 -.





- Remove lock washer - 4 - for selector cable from relay lever - 2 -.

- Pull selector cable and shift cable off from pins - arrows -.

- Remove cable mounting bracket bolts - arrows - from transmission.





- Remove sound insulation

- Remove front and rear crossmembers.

- Separate exhaust system at front at double clamp and disengage exhaust system at rear, remove heat shield

- Pivot selector housing downward and remove with selector cables.

Installing

Installation is in reverse order of removal. Note the following:

The holes in cable retainers have various diameters.

Application









- Apply a small amount of grease (G 000 450 02) on pin - arrows - of transmission shift lever - 1 - and relay lever - 2 -.





- Replace lock washers - 3 - and - 4 - after each disassembly.

- Secure shift cable with lock washer - 3 - and selector cable with lock washer - 4 -.

- Align selector housing parallel to body.

Distance to body must be same on both sides.

- Install angled mounting bracket for center console and center console

- Replace clamp - arrow -.





- Install heat shield.

- Connect exhaust system free of tension and install front and rear crossmembers26 Description and Operation.

- Adjust selector mechanism --> [ Selector Mechanism, Adjusting ] Adjustments.

- Install complete air filter housing if it is located in vicinity of battery24 Description and Operation.

- Connect battery and follow work procedures after connecting battery.
