Engine: Application and ID
Engine Number
• The engine number (engine code and serial number) are located at the front of the engine/transmission joint.
• There is also a label located on the upper timing chain cover with the engine code and serial number on it.
• The engine code letters are also located on the vehicle data plate.
• The data plate is located in the spare tire wheel well or on the luggage compartment floor, as well as in the customer service plan.
• The engine number consists of up to nine alphanumeric characters.
• The first part (maximum 4 letters) represents the engine code , the second (six digit) is the serial number.
• If more than 999,999 engines with the same engine code are produced, the first of the six characters is replaced with a letter.
Four Digit Engine Codes
• Four digit engine codes beginning with "C" are used.
• The first three digits describe the mechanical structure of the engine and are still stamped on the engine, as before.
• The fourth digit describes the engine output and torque and depends on the Engine Control Module (ECM).
• The four digit engine code is on the type label, the vehicle data plate and on the ECM.
• Vehicles for some countries do not have a type label.
