Cylinder Head Assembly Overview, Engine Code CBFA

Always replace the cylinder head bolts.

Always replace self locking nuts, bolts which have been tightened to specifications as well as gaskets and O-rings.

The plastic protectors installed to protect the open valves must only be removed immediately before installing the cylinder head.

When replacing the cylinder head or cylinder head gasket, the coolant must be completely replaced.





1 Cylinder Head Gasket

Always replace.

Note the installed position: The part number faces the cylinder head.

2 Bolt, 25 Nm

3 Transport Strap

4 Bolt

Observe the sequence for loosening, refer to --> [ Cylinder Head Bolt Loosening Sequence ].

Always replace.

Tightening sequence and specification, refer to --> [ Cylinder Head Bolt Tightening Sequence and Specification ].

5 Cylinder Head

Checking for distortion, refer to --> [ Checking Cylinder Head for Distortion ].

Removing and installing, refer to --> [ Cylinder Head ] Cylinder Head.

Checking compression, refer to --> [ Compression, Checking ] Testing and Inspection.

6 Cylinder Head Bolt

Observe the sequence for loosening, refer to --> [ Cylinder Head Bolt Loosening Sequence ].

Always replace.

Tightening sequence and specification, refer to --> [ Cylinder Head Bolt Tightening Sequence and Specification ].

7 O-ring

Always replace.

Lubricate with engine oil.

8 Sealing Plug, 5 Nm

With a ball head for the engine cover.

9 Oil Fill Cap

With gasket.

10 O-ring

Always replace.

Lubricate with engine oil.

11 Sealing Plug

12 to Intake Manifold

13 to Intake Manifold/Turbocharger

14 Ventilation Pipe

15 O-ring

No replacement part.

16 Gasket

No replacement part.

17 Crankcase Ventilation

18 Engine Cover

Removing and installing, refer to --> [ Engine Cover ] Engine Cover.

19 Bolt

Always replace.

Tightening sequence and specification, refer to --> [ Crankcase Ventilation Bolt Tightening Sequence and Specification ].

20 Gasket

No replacement part.

21 Gasket

Replace if damaged.

22 Vacuum Pump

Removing and installing, refer to --> [ Vacuum Pump ] Vacuum Pump.

23 Bolt, 9 Nm

24 Bolt, 9 Nm

25 Secondary Air Injection (AIR) Solenoid Valve (N112)

26 Gasket

Always replace.

27 Mounting Plate

28 Bolt, 9 Nm

29 Connecting Piece

30 O-ring

Always replace.

Lubricate with coolant.

31 Transport Strap

32 Bolt, 25 Nm

33 Bolt, 9 Nm

34 Camshaft Position (CMP) Sensor (G40)

Crankcase Ventilation Bolt Tightening Sequence and Specification





Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required

Torque wrench 5-50 Nm (VAG 1331)

- Tighten the crankcase ventilation bolts in the sequence - 1 through 10 - shown to 11 Nm.

Cylinder Head Bolt Loosening Sequence





- Remove the bolts - arrows -.

- Loosen the cylinder head bolts in the sequence - 1 through 5 - shown.

Cylinder Head Bolt Tightening Sequence and Specification





Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required

Torque wrench 5-50 Nm (VAG 1331)

- Tighten the new cylinder head bolts in 3 passes in sequence - 1 through 5 - as follows:

- Tighten the bolts to 40 Nm.

- Using a TORX(R) bit, tighten an additional 90° (1/4 turn).

- Using a TORX(R) bit, tighten an additional 90° (1/4 turn).

- Tighten the new bolts - arrows - to 8 Nm.

- Tighten the bolts - arrows - using a TORX(R) bit an additional 90° (1/4).

There is no requirement to retighten the cylinder head bolts after repairs.

Checking Cylinder Head for Distortion

Feeler gauge

Straight edge

- Check the cylinder head for distortion using a straight edge and feeler gauge in several places.

Max. permissible distortion: 0.05 mm
