Strut






Strut

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required

Spreader (3424)

Torque wrench 40-200 Nm (VAG 1332)

Engine and transmission jack (VAG 1383A)

Wheel hub support (T10149)

Removing

- Loosen the drive axle to wheel hub bolt, refer to one of the following:

If equipped with a hex bolt, refer to --> [ Drive Axle Hex Bolt, Loosening and Tightening ] Drive Axle Hex Bolt, Loosening and Tightening.

If equipped with a 12 point bolt, refer to --> [ Drive Axle 12 Point Bolt, Loosening and Tightening ] Drive Axle 12 Point Bolt, Loosening and Tightening.

When doing this, the vehicle must not rest on its wheels, otherwise the wheel bearing may be damaged.

- Remove the wheel.

- Remove the coupling rod bolt/nut - arrow - from the strut.





- Remove the wire for the wheel speed sensor from the strut.

- Remove the ball joint nuts - arrows -.





- Remove the lower control arm from the ball joint studs.

- Remove the drive axle outer joint out of the wheel hub.

- Secure the drive axle to vehicle using wire.

CAUTION!
Drive axle must not hang down, otherwise the inner joint may be damaged when bent too far.

- Bolt the ball joint onto the lower control arm again.

- Secure the (VAG 1383 A) with the (T10149) to the wheel hub using one wheel bolt.





CAUTION!
Do not lift or lower the vehicle when the (VAG 1383A) is below the vehicle. Vehicle could slip off the lift.

Do not leave the (VAG 1383A) below the vehicle any longer than necessary.

- Remove the wheel bearing housing/strut pinch bolt and nut - arrow -.





- Insert the (3424) into the slot of the wheel bearing housing.





- Turn the ratchet around 90 degrees and remove from (3424).

- Press the brake disc in direction of the strut by hand.

Otherwise the strut may be tilted in the hole of wheel bearing housing.

- Pull the wheel bearing housing downward off the strut and lower using (VAG 1383A) until the strut hangs free.

- Secure the wheel bearing housing to the bracket/subframe using wire.

- Remove the (VAG 1383A) from the below wheel bearing housing.

CAUTION!
Do not leave the (VAG 1383A) below the vehicle any longer than necessary.

- Remove the wiper arms.

- Remove the plenum chamber cover.

- Remove the bolts - arrows - for the strut and remove the strut.





Installing

- Insert the strut, one of the two markings - arrows - must point in direction of travel when doing this.

Tighten bolts - arrows - for the strut.





- Install the plenum chamber cover.

- Install the wiper arms.

- Secure the (VAG 1383A) with the (T10149) to the wheel hub using one wheel bolt.





CAUTION!
Do not lift or lower the vehicle when the (VAG 1383A) is below the vehicle. Vehicle could slip off the lift.

Do not leave the (VAG 1383A) below the vehicle any longer than necessary.

- Position the strut to the wheel bearing housing.

- Remove the wire securing the wheel bearing housing.

- Carefully lift the wheel bearing housing using the (VAG 1383A) far enough until the pinch bolt for the strut to heel bearing housing can be inserted.

- To do so, press the brake disc by hand in the direction of the strut while lifting.

Otherwise the strut may be tilted in the hole of the wheel bearing housing.

- Remove the (3424).

- Tighten the wheel bearing housing/strut pinch bolt/nut - arrow -.





CAUTION!
Do not leave the (VAG 1383A) below the vehicle any longer than necessary.

- Remove the ball joint nuts - arrows -.





- Install the drive axle into the wheel hub.

- Install the ball joint into the lower control arm.

- Bolt the ball joint to the lower control arm.

Make sure that the ball joint boot is not damaged or twisted.

- Tighten the drive axle to wheel hub bolt, refer to one of the following:

If equipped with a hex bolt, refer to --> [ Drive Axle Hex Bolt, Loosening and Tightening ] Drive Axle Hex Bolt, Loosening and Tightening.

If equipped with a 12 point bolt, refer to --> [ Drive Axle 12 Point Bolt, Loosening and Tightening ] Drive Axle 12 Point Bolt, Loosening and Tightening.

When doing this, the vehicle must not rest on its wheels, otherwise the wheel bearing may be damaged.

Further installation is in the reverse sequence to removal.

- Install the wheel and tighten. Refer to --> [ Wheel Bolt Tightening Specification ] .
