Timing Components: Testing and Inspection

Valve Timing, Checking

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required

Camshaft clamp (T40070)

Procedure

- Remove the cylinder head cover. Refer to --> [ Cylinder Head Cover ] Cylinder Head Cover.

- Lock the crankshaft for checking the valve timing. Refer to --> [ Crankshaft, Locking to Check/Adjust Valve Timing ] Crankshaft, Locking to Check / Adjust Valve Timing.

Valve Timing is Correct

Valve timing is correct when the bolts of the (T40070) can be installed easily into the camshafts as shown. Support surfaces of (T40070) must lie flat on the flats of the camshaft when doing this.

- If bolts could not be installed easily, attempt to rotate the exhaust camshaft at the recess using an open end wrench - A - (18 mm or 19 mm, depending on wrench width) slightly in - direction of arrow - in order to eliminate any play in the timing chain.

If the bolts of the (T40070) can now be installed easily with the timing chain tensioned in this manner, the valve timing is also correct. Possibly the crankshaft was not secured correctly.

Valve Timing is Not Correct

Valve timing is not correct when the bolts of the (T40070) cannot be installed easily into the camshafts despite the tensioned timing chain.

In this case, the valve timing must be adjusted, refer to --> [ Valve Timing, Adjusting ] Adjustments.

Assembly

Assembly is performed in the reverse order of removal. When doing this note the following:

Remove the (T40069) from the cylinder block and install the locking bolt. Tightening specification: 30 Nm.
