Clutch, Servicing with One-Piece Flywheel

Clutch, Servicing with One-Piece Flywheel

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required

Retainer (3067)

Centering mandrel (3190 A)

Torque Wrench (V.A.G 1331)

(Transmission removed)

Replace clutch plates and pressure plates with damaged or loose rivets.

Ensure the engine to transmission alignment sleeves are installed in the cylinder block, install if necessary.

If alignment sleeves are not present, shifting difficulties, clutch problems and possibly noise in transmission (loose gear rattling) will occur.

1 Flywheel

Make sure centering pins fit securely

Keep the clutch lining contact surface free of grooves, oil and grease

2 Clutch plate

The spring cage faces the pressure plate

Lightly grease splines

Clean the input shaft splines and on used clutch plates, the hub splines, remove corrosion and apply only a very thin coating of grease (G 000 100) onto the input shaft splines. Then move clutch plate back and forth on input shaft until the hub moves freely on the shaft. Excess grease must be removed.

3 Pressure plate

Check spring connections and rivet connections --> [ Checking spring connections and rivet connections ]

Pressure plates are corrosion-protected and greased. Only the contact surfaces may be cleaned, otherwise the service life of the clutch will be considerably reduced.

Loosen and tighten in stages and in diagonal sequence

Centering clutch plate and removing and installing pressure plate

- Loosen and tighten bolts in stages and in a diagonal sequence.

- Reverse position of flywheel retainer (3067) when removing.

Pressure plate running surface and clutch plate lining must make full contact against flywheel. Tighten securing bolts in diagonal sequence equally so that centering holes of pressure plate and centering pins of flywheel do not become damaged.

Checking ends of the diaphragm spring

Wear up to half the thickness of the diaphragm spring is permitted.

Checking spring connections and rivet connections

- Check spring connections between pressure plate and cover for cracks, and check rivet connections for secure fit.

Replace pressure plate if spring ends are damaged or rivet connections - arrows - are loose.
