Tail Lamp, Through 06.2005
CAUTION!
• Turn off the ignition and all electrical components.
• Remove the ignition key.
Removing
1. Knurled nut
2. Screw
3. Tail lamp
- Remove the cap on each side inside the luggage compartment.
- Remove the knurled nut - 1 - by hand from the inside.
- Remove the tail lamp - 3 - and disconnect the connectors.
Installing
- Connect harness connector.
- Install the tail lamp - 3 - into the opening in the body.
- Install the screw - 2 -.
- Install the tail lamp into the cut-out - arrow -.
Make sure the seal fits correctly.
- Install the knurled nut - 1 - from the inside and tighten it to 1 Nm.
- Install the cap on each side inside the luggage compartment.
- Make sure the tail lamps are working correctly.
Tail Lamp, From 07.2005
Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
• Trim Removal Wedge (VAS 3409)
• Removing the right tail lamp assembly is shown in the illustrations.
• The New Beetle Convertible has a grille instead of a cover.
CAUTION!
• Turn off the ignition and all electrical components.
• Remove the ignition key.
Removing
- Pry off the cover with a screwdriver.
- Remove the knurled nut - arrow -.
- Tape off the areas marked with - arrows - with commercially available tape.
- Carefully slide the (VAS 3409) under the seal.
- Lift the tail lamp assembly with the (VAS 3409) and remove it.
- Disconnect the connectors - arrow - on the tail lamp assembly.
Installing
Install in reverse order of removal, noting the following:
• Check the seal and replace if necessary.
- Install the screw.
- Insert the tail lamp into the opening in the body.
- Insert the guide - 3 - into the in opening in the body - arrow -. When doing this, one guide - 1 - will fit under the edge of the opening in the body and the other guide - 2 - will fit over the edge of the opening in the body.
- Tighten the knurled nut - arrow - to 1 Nm.
- Remove the tape.
- Make sure the tail lamps are working correctly.
Tail Lamp Bulbs, Through 06.2005
Removing and installing the bulbs for the turn signals, brake and tail lamps is identical. Only removing and installing the brake and tail lamps is described here.
CAUTION!
• Turn off the ignition and all electrical components.
• Remove the ignition key.
Removing
- Remove the tail lamp, refer to => [ Tail Lamp, Through 06.2005 ].
- Turn the bulb socket approximately 45° in direction of - arrow - and remove it from the housing.
- Remove the bulb from the socket.
Two-filament bulb : 12 V 21/5 W
Installing
CAUTION!
• Do not touch the glass of the light bulb, when installing. Your fingers will leave traces of grease on the glass which, when the light is switched on, will evaporate and cloud the glass.
Install in reverse order of removal.
- When installing, make sure the bulb socket latches into the bulb housing when turning it opposite the direction of - arrow -.
- Make sure the tail lamps are working correctly.
Tail Lamp Bulbs, From 07.2005
• Replacing the bulbs in the right tail lamp assembly is shown in the illustrations.
CAUTION!
• Turn off the ignition and all electrical components.
• Remove the ignition key.
Removing
- Remove the tail lamp assembly. Refer to => [ Tail Lamp, From 07.2005 ].
- Disconnect the connectors - arrow - on the tail lamp assembly.
- Turn the bulb socket all the way in direction of - arrow - and remove it.
- Remove the bulb from the bulb socket.
• Turn signal: 12 V/21 W
• Brake and tail lamp: 12 V 21/5 W
Installing
CAUTION!

Install in reverse order of removal, noting the following:
- Insert the bulb socket and turn it all the way opposite the direction of - arrow -.
- Make sure the tail lamps are working correctly.
