Transmission Position Sensor/Switch: Service and Repair
Multifunction Transmission Range Switch
Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
• Torque Wrench (5-50 Nm) (V.A.G 1331)
Removing
- Place the selector lever in the "N" position.
- Turn the ignition off.
- Do not open the cooling system.
- Press the selector lever cable lock - 3 - together and pull the selector lever cable upward out of the bracket.
- Remove the selector lever cable - 1 - from the lever/shift rod by hand.
- Take care not to bend or kink the selector lever cable.
- Disconnect the connector from multifunction transmission range switch (F125).
- Remove the nut - 1 -.
- Remove the spring washer - 2 - and lever - 3 - from the shift rod - 4 -.
- Bend the tabs on the locking washer - 2 - back using a screwdriver.
- If the tabs on the locking washer break while bending, the locking washer must be replaced.
- Remove the nut - 1 -.
- Remove the bolts - 5 -.
- Remove the multifunction switch - 4 - with washers - 2 and 3 - from the shift rod - 6 -.
Installing
Installation is performed in the reverse order of removal. Pay attention to the following:
- Install the multifunction switch - 4 - to the shift rod - 6 -.
- Hand tighten the multifunction switch bolts - 5 -.
- Bend the tabs of the locking washer - 2 - back.
- Install the washers - 2 and 3 - onto the shift rod - 6 -.
- Install the washer - 2 - with the tabs facing upward.
- Install the washer - 2 - with the long and thin guides into the long and narrow depressions in the shift rod - 6 -.
- Install the nut - 1 - and tighten it to 7 Nm.
- Secure the nut - 1 - by bending the tabs on the locking washer - 2 - upward.
- If one or more tabs on the locking washer break when bending, the locking washer must be replaced.
- Install the lever - 3 - onto the shift rod - 4 -.
- Shift the transmission to the "P" position using the lever - 3 -. To do so, push the lever - 3 - rearward against the direction of travel until it stops.
- Shift the transmission to the "N" position using the lever - 3 -. To do so, press the lever - 3 - two latched positions toward the front in the direction of travel.
- Install the spring washer - 2 - and nut - 1 - onto the shift rod - 4 -.
- Tighten the nut - 1 - to 13 Nm.
6 Cylinder Gas Vehicles
- Install the coolant expansion tank.
- Connect the battery Ground (GND) cable with the ignition turned off.
