Bevel Box Gear Oil, Checking and Filling
Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
• Torque Wrench (5-50 Nm) (V.A.G 1331)
• Charging Device F/Haldex 2 Coup. (VAS 6291)
• Adapter for Oil Filling (VAS 6291/2)
• Drip Tray for VAS 6100 (VAS 6208)
The bevel box is attached to the side of the transmission and has it own oil system.
Checking
Requirements
• Bevel box must be in the installed location.
- Remove the noise insulation.
- Place the (VAS 6208) underneath.
• Cover the area below the oil fill plug - arrow - with a cloth.
- Remove the oil fill plug - arrow - from the bevel box.
The oil fill plug - arrow - must be replaced.
Oil level is correct if the bevel box is filled with oil as far as the bottom edge of the oil fill plug hole.
If oil comes in contact with bevel box, carefully clean it up.
- Add oil if necessary.
- Install a new oil fill plug - arrow -.
- Tighten the plug to specification.
Filling
Requirements
• Vehicle is on a flat surface
- Use (VAS 6291) to add oil:
- Route the hose for (VAS 6291) behind the right drive axle and out through the right wheel housing.
• Cover the area below the oil fill plug - arrow - with a cloth.
- Remove the oil fill plug - arrow - from the bevel box.
- Install the (VAS 6291/2)- A - until seated.
- You can also use a socket wrench.
- arrow - = 5 mm socket wrench, commercially available
- Connect the (VAS 6291)- B - to the (VAS 6291/2)- A -.
• The hose must not hang through.
- Make sure the valve - arrow - is closed.
- Install a oil container - A - onto the (VAS 6291).
- Open the valve - arrow - and hold the oil container as shown in the illustration.
The bevel box is now filled.
- Raise the vehicle after a few minutes.
• If the bevel box is filled correctly, oil should leak out from the (VAS 6291/2)- A -.
• If no oil is leaking out, lower the vehicle and perform the filling procedure again.
- Raise the vehicle.
- If oil leaks from the (VAS 6291/2)- A -, set down the oil container (for example, on a tool trolley).
A portion of the excess oil will run back into the oil container.
- When no more oil flow backs, remove the (VAS 6291) by pressing the tab in the - direction of the arrow -.
- Remove the (VAS 6291/2)
- Install the previous oil fill plug.
- Make sure there is still oil in the (VAS 6291) hose.
- Start the engine, select a gear and allow the transmission to turn for approximately 2 minutes.
- Turn off the engine and remove the oil fill plug.
- If necessary, fill again with oil up to the lower edge of the fill plug hole.
- Install a new oil fill plug - arrow -.
- Tighten the oil fill plug to specification.
If oil comes in contact with the bevel box, carefully wipe it up.
- Install the noise insulation.
