Oil Pump: Service and Repair
Oil Pump
• In MY 08, the oil pump drive chain was changed from a roller chain to a toothed chain. The gears are now wider and the oil pump shim (T03005/1) must also be used when securing the oil pump.
Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
• Torque Wrench (5-50 Nm) (V.A.G 1331)
• Counterhold Tool (T10172)
• Oil Pump Align Plate (T03005)
• Oil Pump Shim (T03005/1)
Removing
- Remove the upper oil pan. Refer to => [ Upper Oil Pan ] Upper Oil Pan.
- Tension the oil pump drive chain tensioner - 1 -, secure it using the (T10115) and remove it.
- Remove the oil pump sprocket bolts - 1 -.
Hold the sprocket - 2 - in place using the (T10172).
- Remove the sprocket from the oil pump and remove the oil pump bolts and pump.
Installing
• Crankshaft is secured
- Replace the O-ring - item 25 -=> [ O-ring ] Service and Repair and tighten the oil pump bolt to the cylinder block by hand.
- Position the sprocket to the oil pump with the writing facing outward. Secure it with a new bolt - 1 -. The drive chain is not installed yet.
Tightening specification: 20 Nm + 90° (1/4) additional turn.
- Loosen the bolts - 2 through 4 -. Oil pump must be able to be slid easily.
- Check the (T03005). If there are still protective shields on the magnets, remove them.
- Check that there are no shavings located on the magnets on the (T03005). The contact surfaces on the crankshaft, the (T03005) and the sprocket must be clean.
- Place the (T03005/1) and the (T03005) on the crankshaft and secure both with 2 bolts - 1 - for the crankshaft/vibration damper pulley.
Tightening specification: 30 Nm
Oil pump is activated by magnets.
- Remove the (T40069).
- Press the crankshaft in the direction of axial bearing play toward the belt drive - arrow 1 - and secure it with a - shim - as shown in the illustration.
- Press the oil pump lightly toward the chain drive - arrow 2 -.
• This step is important in order to guarantee correct position of sprockets to each other.
- In this condition, first tighten bolts - 2 and 3 - and then bolt - 4 - to 25 Nm.
- Install the (T40069) again. Crankshaft must only be rotated slightly around Top Dead Center (TDC) point for this. Otherwise there is a risk the valves rest on the pistons.
- Remove the (T03005) and the (T03005/1 ).
- If a new oil pump is installed, fill the oil pump with some engine oil via the intake channel and rotate the oil pump several times through.
- Place the oil pump drive chain onto the oil pump sprocket.
- Install the upper oil pan. Refer to => [ Upper Oil Pan ] Upper Oil Pan.
- Install the guide rail - 2 -, relieve the tension on the oil pump drive chain tensioner - 1 - and pull out the (T10115).
• Make sure that chain lies correct in the guide rail - 4 - and in the tensioning rail - 3 -.
- Adjust the valve timing. Refer to => [ Valve Timing, Adjusting ] Adjustments.
The rest of the installation follows the reverse of the removal procedures. When doing this note the following:
• Remove the (T40069) from the rear of the cylinder block and install the locking bolt. Tighten the locking bolt to 45 Nm.
• Fill with coolant. Refer to => [ Draining and Filling ] Draining and Filling.
