Fuel Delivery and Air Induction: Service and Repair
Fuel System, Bleeding
Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
• Adapter for K-Jetronic Test Device (V.A.G 1318/20)
• Suction Pump (VAS 5226)
• Vehicle Diagnostic, Testing, and Information System (VAS 5051B)
• If fuel supply system was opened, it must always be bled before starting engine.
• If fuel supply system is not bled, catalytic converter will be damaged.
• Observe the rules for cleanliness. Refer to => [ Clean Working Conditions ] Fuel Supply.
Procedure
CAUTION!
Fuel supply line is under pressure! Wear protective goggles and protective clothing to prevent injuries and contact with skin. Before loosening the fuel lines, place a cloth around the connection point. Disconnect the connection carefully to release the pressure.
- Remove the protective cap - arrow - from the bleeder valve.
- Turn the valve (T-piece) on the (V.A.G 1318/20) counterclockwise until it is completely open.
- Install (V.A.G 1318/20-1) onto (V.A.G 1318/20).
- Install (V.A.G 1318/20) hand tight onto the bleeder valve.
- Install the hose from the (VAS 5226) onto the (V.A.G 1318/20-1) as shown.
- Turn the valve (T-piece) on the (V.A.G 1318/20-1) clockwise into the bleeder until seated.
- Check the adapter and hose connections for leaks.
Connect the vehicle tester as follows:
- Connect the diagnostic cable connector - 2 - to the Data Link Connector (DLC) in the driver's footwell.
- Press the following buttons on the display one after another:

- Press the arrow button > repeatedly until the fuel pump relay (J17) is activated. This activates the fuel pump. Let the diagnosis run until fuel flows out of the ventilation valve without bubbles. Then end the output Diagnostic Test Mode (DTM).
• If the output DTM is interrupted, the engine must be started for a short time before the mode can be accessed again. Output DTM is automatically cancelled after 60 seconds.
- Turn the valve (T-piece) on the (V.A.G 1318/20-1) counterclockwise until it is completely open again.
- Clamp off the hose from the (VAS 5226) using (3094) and remove it from the (V.A.G 1318/20-1).
- Remove the (V.A.G 1318/20) from the bleeder valve.
