P0513 - Invalid Skim Key
For wiring diagrams, refer to.
• When Monitored: With the ignition on.
• Set Condition: The PCM detects an invalid ignition key. One trip fault.
• Always perform the pre-diagnostic troubleshooting procedure before proceeding. Refer to => Non-DTC Based Diagnostics. Pre-Diagnostic Troubleshooting Procedure
Test Step 1 - Active DTC
• Attempt to start the engine.
When the engine is operating, do not stand in direct line with the fan. Do not put your hands near the pulleys, belts, or fan. Do not wear loose clothing. Failure to follow these instructions can result in personal injury or death.
• With a scan tool, select view DTCs.
Is the status active for this DTC?
Yes
• Go to Test Step 2 => [ Test
Step 2 - No Communication with SKREEM/WCM ]
No
• Go to Test Step 7 => [ Test
Step 7 - Ignition Key ]
Test Step 2 - No Communication with SKREEM/WCM
• For vehicle communication problems, use the scan tool to refer to the network review screen. The screen depicts a high level view of the vehicle network. Fault and problem areas appear in red. Selecting any of the network components allows access to the source of the problem.
• With the scan tool, attempt to communicate with the SKREEM/WCM.
Can the scan tool communicate with the SKREEM/WCM?
Yes
• Go to Test Step 3 => [ Test
Step 3 - SKREEM/WIN Trouble Codes Set ]
No
• Refer to => Non-DTC Based Diagnostics.
• Perform the SKREEM/WIN Verification Test. => Non-DTC
Based Diagnostics. Wireless Ignition Node Verification Test
Test Step 3 - SKREEM/WIN Trouble Codes Set
• With the scan tool, check for SKREEM/WIN DTCs.
Are any DTCs present in the SKREEM/WIN?
Yes
• Refer to => Non-DTC Based Diagnostics.
• Perform the SKREEM/WIN Verification Test. => Non-DTC
Based Diagnostics. Wireless Ignition Node Verification Test
No
• Go to Test Step 4 => [ Test
Step 4 - VIN Programmed into PCM ]
Test Step 4 - VIN Programmed into PCM
• With the scan tool, display the VIN that is programmed in the PCM.
Has the correct VIN been programmed into the PCM?
Yes
• Go to Test Step 5 => [ Test
Step 5 - Sentry Key/Wireless Control Module (SKREEM/WIN) ]
No
• Program the correct VIN into the PCM and retest.
• Perform the SKREEM/WIN Verification Test. => Non-DTC
Based Diagnostics. Wireless Ignition Node Verification Test
Test Step 5 - Sentry Key/Wireless Control Module (SKREEM/WIN)
• Turn the ignition OFF.
• Replace and program the SKREEM/WIN.
• Turn the ignition ON.
• With the scan tool, erase all SKREEM/WIN and PCM DTCs.
• Attempt to start the engine.
• With a scan tool, select view DTCs.
Is the status active for this DTC?
Yes
• Go to Test Step 6 => [ Test
Step 6 - PCM ]
No
• Test complete.
Test Step 6 - PCM
• Using the wiring diagram/schematic as a guide, inspect the wiring and connectors between the SKREEM/WIN and the PCM.
• Look for any chafed, pierced, pinched, or partially broken wires.
• Look for broken, bent, pushed out or corroded terminals.
• Refer to any technical service bulletins that may apply.
Were any problems found?
Yes
• Repair as necessary.
• Perform the PCM Verification Test. Refer to => Non-DTC
Based Diagnostics. PCM Verification Test
No
• Replace and program the PCM.
• Perform the PCM Verification Test. Refer to => Non-DTC
Based Diagnostics. PCM Verification Test
Test Step 7 - Ignition Key
• This DTC could have been set if the SKREEM/WIN harness connector was disconnected, or if the SKREEM/WIN was replaced recently.
• All of the ignition keys for this vehicle must be tested to verify proper operation.
• If this DTC does not reset, it may have been an actual theft attempt.
• Turn the ignition ON.
• Verify that the correct VIN is programmed into the PCM and SKREEM/WIN.
• Turn the ignition OFF.
• Using each vehicle key, turn the ignition on and start the engine.
• With a scan tool, view DTCs for each key.
Is the status active for this DTC?
Yes
• Replace the ignition key.
• Perform the PCM Verification Test. Refer to => Non-DTC
Based Diagnostics. PCM Verification Test
No
• Test Complete.
