Valve and Spring Installed Height
Valve and Spring Installed Height
Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
• Valve Spring Compressor Tool (C-3422-D)
• Valve Spring Adapter (6526A)
- Coat the valve stems with clean engine oil and insert them in a cylinder head.
- If the valves or seats have been refaced, check valve tip height (A). If the intake valve tip height is greater than 43.65 mm (1.7185 in) or the exhaust valve tip height is greater than 45.98 mm (1.8102 in), grind valve the tip until within specifications. Make sure the measurement is taken from the cylinder head surface (4) to the top of valve stem.
- Install the valve spring seat (5) and spring (4) over the valve guides on all the valve stems. Ensure that the garter spring is intact around the top of the rubber seal.
- Place the valve spring (4) (color-coded end facing up ) and valve retainer (3) into position on the spring seat.
- Compress the valve springs with valve spring compressor tool (C-3422-D) and valve spring adapter (6526A).
- If the valves and/or seats are refaced, measure the installed height of the springs (1 and 2). Measurements are taken from the top of the spring seat to the bottom surface of the spring retainer. If the height is greater than 38.75 mm (1.5256 in), install a 0.762 mm (0.030 in) spacer in the head counterbore under the valve spring seat in order to bring the spring height back to within specifications.
