Engine Cranks But Does Not Start
Engine Cranks But Does Not Start
For a complete wiring diagram, refer to.
Test Step 1 - Undercharged Battery
• Diagnose any 5 volt supply DTCs before continuing
• The battery must be fully charged and in good condition. An undercharged battery may produce invalid test results.
• Test the battery.
Were any problems found?
Yes
• Charge or replace the battery as necessary and retest.
• Perform the PCM Verification Test. Refer to => [ PCM Verification Test ] PCM Verification Test.
No
• Go to Test Step 2
Test Step 2 - System DTCs Present
• If the battery was low, make sure the battery is properly charged and attempt to start the vehicle. Crank the engine for 15 seconds, 3 consecutive times. This will allow any DTCs to set that may have been erased due to a dead battery.
• With the scan tool, select system DTCs to read DTCs in all modules. If any DTCs are present, perform the appropriate diagnostic procedure before continuing with this test. If a no response condition is detected in any module.
Were any problems found?
Yes
• Perform the appropriate diagnostic procedure and repair as necessary. If any pending DTCs are detected, perform the diagnostic procedure as if the DTC is active.
• Perform the PCM Verification Test. Refer to => [ PCM Verification Test ] PCM Verification Test.
No
• Go to Test Step 3
Test Step 3 - PCM Power or Ground Circuit Open or High Resistance
• Turn the ignition off.
• Disconnect the PCM harness connectors.
• Using a 12 volt test lamp, check all PCM power and ground circuits.
• The test lamp must be illuminated and bright. Compare the brightness to that of a direct connection to the battery.
Is the test lamp brightly illuminated when checking each of the PCM power and ground circuits?
Yes
• Repair the PCM power or ground circuit for an open circuit or high resistance.
• Perform the PCM Verification Test. Refer to => [ PCM Verification Test ] PCM Verification Test.
No
• Go to Test Step 4
Test Step 4 - Open Fuse
• Inspect all of the fuses in the totally integrated power module. If any open fuses are found, check the related circuits for a short to ground or high resistance.
Were any problems found?
Yes
• Repair as necessary.
• Perform the PCM Verification Test. Refer to => [ PCM Verification Test ] PCM Verification Test.
No
• Go to Test Step 5
Test Step 5 - Fuel Delivery System Test
• Verify that the fuel tank is not empty before continuing.
• Perform the fuel delivery system diagnostic procedure. Refer to => [ Fuel Delivery System Test ] Fuel Delivery System Test.
Were any problems found?
Yes
• Repair as necessary.
• Perform the PCM Verification Test. Refer to => [ PCM Verification Test ] PCM Verification Test.
No
• Go to Test Step 6
Test Step 6 - Fuel Contamination
• Check the fuel system for contamination.
Was any evidence of fuel contamination found?
Yes
• Clean and repair the fuel system as necessary.
• Perform the PCM Verification Test. Refer to => [ PCM Verification Test ] PCM Verification Test.
No
• Go to Test Step 7
Test Step 7 - Ignition Coil Operation Test
• Perform the ignition coil operation diagnostic procedure. Refer to => [ Ignition Coil Operation Test ] Ignition Coil Operation Test.
Were any problems found?
Yes
• Repair as necessary.
• Perform the PCM Verification Test. Refer to => [ PCM Verification Test ] PCM Verification Test.
No
• Go to Test Step 8
Test Step 8 - Engine Mechanical System Test
• Perform the engine mechanical diagnostic procedure. Refer to => [ Engine Mechanical System Test ] Engine Mechanical System Test.
Were any problems found?
Yes
• Repair as necessary.
• Perform the PCM Verification Test. Refer to => [ PCM Verification Test ] PCM Verification Test
No
• Test complete. Refer to any Technical Service Bulletins that may apply.
