Front Door Side Impact Sensor

Front Door Side Impact Sensor

To avoid serious or fatal injury on vehicles equipped with airbags, disable the supplemental restraint system before attempting any steering wheel, steering column, airbag, seat belt tensioner, impact sensor, or instrument panel component diagnosis or service. Disconnect the negative battery cable, then wait two minutes for the system capacitor to discharge before performing further diagnosis or service. This is the only sure way to disable the SRS. Failure to take the proper precautions could result in accidental airbag deployment.

To avoid serious or fatal injury, never strike or drop the side impact sensor, as it can damage the impact sensor or affect its calibration. The side impact sensor enables the system to deploy the side SRS components. If an impact sensor is accidentally dropped during service, the sensor must be scrapped and replaced with a new unit. Failure to observe this warning could result in accidental, incomplete, or improper side SRS component deployment.

Removing

- Disconnect the negative battery cable.

- Wait two minutes for the system capacitor to discharge before further service.

- Remove the trim panel from the inside of the right or left front door. Refer to => [ Front Door Trim Panel ] Front Door Trim Panel.

- Disconnect the front door wire harness connector (3) from the side impact sensor (1).

- Remove the two screws (2) securing the side impact sensor to the front door module carrier panel (4).

- Remove the side impact sensor from the door.

Installing

Be certain that the gasket between the pressure type side impact sensor and the front door module carrier panel is in good condition and positioned on the back of the sensor. There MUST be a good seal between the sensor and the module carrier panel for the sensor to operate properly. If the gasket is in poor condition, replace the sensor.

- Position the side impact sensor (1) to the right or left front door module carrier panel (4). When the sensor is correctly positioned, the arrow on the sensor label will be pointed toward the bottom of the door.

- Install and tighten the two screws (2) securing the side impact sensor to the door.

- Connect the front door wire harness connector (3) to the sensor.

- Install the trim panel onto the inside of the right or left front door. Refer to => [ Front Door Trim Panel ] Front Door Trim Panel.

- Perform the SRS verification test procedure.
