Open Fuel Injectors, Checking

Open Fuel Injectors, Checking

Open injectors means: The nozzle needle does not close all of the way and fuel leaks into the cylinder.

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required

Torque Wrench (5-50 Nm) (V.A.G 1331)

Ratchet, Reversible (V.A.G 1331/1)

Tool Insert AF 19 (V.A.G 1331/5)

Socket (T40055)

Socket 14 mm (3150)

Plug (T40040)

CAUTION!
Follow the guidelines for a clean working environment when working on the fuel system. Refer to => [ Clean Working Conditions and Fuel System Work Instructions ] Clean Working Conditions and Fuel System Work Instructions.

Always follow these rules before and during work.

- Erase the Engine Control Module (ECM) Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) memory.

- Remove the engine cover. Refer to => [ Remove the engine cover. First pull the cover forward and then pull it upward ] Engine, Removing.

- Clean all connections, for example with commercially available detergent, before removing.

Maintain clean working conditions. Contamination must not enter the fuel system.

Check one cylinder after another.

- Dry all cleaned components.

Begin with cylinder 1.

- Remove the union fitting on the cylinder 1 fuel rail and additionally slightly loosen the union fitting on the fuel injector. Seal the open connection on the injector line. Refer to one of the following:

14 mm wrench.

17 mm wrench.

19 mm wrench.

- Seal the open rail connection on the rail element using (T40040).

- The connector for the injector that will be checked must be connected.

- Erase all DTCs.

- Perform a test drive.

If the correct injector is found, there will not be a DTC regarding "positive control deviation".

There could be other DTCs. These new DTCs can be ignored. They are occurring as a result of the work being done.

- After the road test, check the DTC memory. If there is a DTC regarding "positive control deviation", repeat the steps for all rail element connections until the DTC is no longer present after a road test.

Follow the installed instructions for all injector lines.

- Lubricate the threads on the union nuts with fuel.

- Tighten the union fitting for the high pressure lines by hand. Make sure it fits free of tension.

- Use (V.A.G 1331) and (V.A.G 1331/1) to tighten the high pressure lines to the injectors.

Tightening the High Pressure Line to the Fuel Rail using a 14 mm Wrench

Tightening the High Pressure Line to the Fuel Rail using a 17 mm Wrench

Tightening the High Pressure Line to the Fuel Rail using a 19 mm Wrench

Tightening specification for the high pressure line union fittings: 28 Nm

- Inspect the fuel system for leaks. Refer to => [ Fuel System, Performing Leak Test ] Fuel System, Performing Leak Test.
