HID Headlamps and Cornering Lamp (AFS)
HID Headlamps and Cornering Lamp (AFS)
Usage and safety notes, refer to => [ HID Headlamps, Usage and Safety Precautions ] Service Precautions.
General Description
• AFS means Adaptive Front lighting System
• The AFS system is a lighting system with headlamps, HID lamps and a cornering lamp.
The following description is based on the AFS headlamp with integrated turn signal.
To find out which components belong to the AFS lighting system, refer to => [ AFS Light System Electrical Component Locations ] Locations.
The headlamps described here have Bi-Xenon function.
• Bi-Xenon means the low beam and high beam are generated with one gas discharge lamp.
• Normal Xenon headlamps means the low beam is generated with one gas discharge lamp.
The high beam function on Bi-Xenon headlamps is generated as follows:
• When operating the high beam function, an electro-mechanical adjuster ( Left Low Beam Reflector Motor (V294) or Right Low Beam Reflector Motor (V295) ) opens the dimmed region of the low beam headlamp. A high beam light emission results.
• For this reason, the high beam is also adjusted automatically with the low beam on Bi-Xenon headlamps.
• Headlamps with HID lamps and a cornering lamp do not have auxiliary high beams.
Additional Information
• Familiarity with the function and operation of the lighting system is essential in the event of customer complaints.
Refer to the Owner's Manual.
DTC Recognition and Display
The automatic headlamp range control and vehicle electrical system control module are equipped with on board diagnostic which facilitates fault finding for the gas-discharge lamps.
For troubleshooting, use Vehicle Diagnostic, Testing and Information System (VAS 5051A) in operating mode "Guided Fault Finding".
• The indicator light lamp failure lights up in instrument cluster when headlamp range control or AFS (Adaptive Front lighting System) system malfunctions.
