Steering Column, Vehicles with Knee Airbags

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required

Torque wrench (V.A.G 1331)

Torque wrench (V.A.G 1332)

Vehicle Diagnosis, Testing and Information System (VAS 5051)

Removing

Check if the vehicle has a knee airbag or not before starting.

The word "AIRBAG" is located under the storage compartment- 1 - next to the steering wheel on the left side. This is how to tell if the vehicle has knee airbags.






If the vehicle does not have knee airbags, the perform the following repairs. Refer to => [ Steering Column, Vehicles without Knee Airbags ] Steering Column, Vehicles Without Knee Airbags.

The steering column is delivered only as a complete replacement part. Servicing is not possible.

The steering lock housing can be transferred. .


Before starting work on electrical equipment and removing steering wheel, the following conditions must be fulfilled:

The technician must electrostatic discharge. This is done by touching a grounded metal part, for example, water lines, heater pipe, metal carriers or a workshop hoist. Refer to => [ General Repair Information ] Service and Repair.

If this not done, the electronic steering column lock control module (J764) could fail later.

Disconnect the battery ground cable.

The wheels must be in the straight-ahead position.

If these notes are not observed, the airbag system may not function properly during vehicle operation!

- Set the wheels to the straight ahead position.

- Pull the lever on the side of the steering column downward.

- Swing steering column downward as far as possible and pull out.

- Push lever under steering column upward again.

- Remove the airbag from the steering wheel.

- Remove steering wheel. Refer to => [ Steering Wheel ] Service and Repair.

- Remove steering column switch trim.

- Remove steering column switch. .

Vehicles with Ignition Switch

- Disconnect the harness connector - 1 -.






Vehicle with "Keyless Access" Keyless Locking and Starting System

- Disconnect the harness connector - 1 -.






- Unclip the wire from the retainer on the electronic steering column lock control module (J764) - arrow -.

Continuation for All Vehicles

- Remove footwell vent outlets beneath steering column.

- Remove the knee airbag.

- Remove bolts - Arrows -.






- Remove the storage compartment - 1 -.






- Remove the bolts - arrows - from the knee airbag mount - 1 - on the left side.






- Remove the bolts - arrows - from the knee airbag mount - 1 - on the right side.






- Remove the knee airbag mount.

- Press the tabs - arrow - on the cable channel - 1 - inward on both side. Then remove the cable channel - 1 - from the guide on the steering column.






- Remove the ground cable from the steering column.

- Remove the footwell trim panel - 1 -.






- Remove the bolt - 1 - and pull off universal joint - 2 - from steering gear.






- Hold the steering column steady - 1 - and remove the bolts - arrows -.






- Lower the steering column - 1 - and carefully remove it from the guide - arrow -.







Pay particular attention to the correct handling and transport of the steering column. Refer to => [ Steering Column, Handling and Transporting ] Steering Column Handling and Transporting.

Installing

- Install the steering column - 1 - with the opening into the guide - arrow -.






Only in this way is the correct installation position of steering column to mounting bracket guaranteed.

Always follow the bolt installation sequence when installing the steering column.

- Secure the steering column with the bolts, on after the other - 1 -, - 2 -, - 3 - and - 4 -.






- Tighten the bolts to the tightening specification in the sequence shown.

- Install cable channel - 1 - beneath steering column.






Tabs - arrow - must engage into guide on both sides.

- Attach the ground cable to the steering column.

- Connect universal joint - 2 - onto steering gear pinion and tighten the bolt - 1 -.






- Install the footwell trim panel - 1 -.






- Install the knee airbag mount - 1 - in the assembly carrier bracket.






The tabs on the knee airbag mount - 1 - must fit into the openings - arrows - on the assembly carrier bracket.

- Install the bolts - arrows - into the knee airbag mount - 1 - on the right side.






- Install the bolts - arrows - into the knee airbag mount - 1 - on the left side.






- Tighten the bolts - arrows -.






- Install the storage compartment - 1 -.






- Install the knee airbag.

- Install footwell vent outlets beneath steering column.

Vehicles with Ignition Switch

- Connect the connector - 1 -.






Vehicle with "Keyless Access" Keyless Locking and Starting System

- Connect the connector - 1 -.






- Clip the wire into the retainer on the electronic steering column lock control module (J764) - arrow -.

Continuation for All Vehicles

- Install steering column switch.

- Install steering column switch trim.

- Installing steering wheel. Refer to => [ Steering Wheel ] Service and Repair.

- Install airbag in steering wheel.

- Perform basic setting for steering angle sensor (G85) with the (VAS 5051).
