Driver and Front Passenger Side Curtain Airbag, Golf from MY 2009, 4-door
• The following describes removing and installing on the left side of the vehicle. Removing and installing on the right side is identical.
Removing
• Read the Safety Instructions for working with airbags, belt tensioners and battery cut-out units. Refer to => [ Airbag, Belt Tensioner and Battery Cut-Out Units, General Safety Precautions ] Airbag, Belt Tensioner and Battery Cut-Out Units, General Safety Precautions.
• Pay attention especially to the instructions for side airbag modules. Refer to => [ Side Airbag Module, Special Notes ] Side Airbag Module, Special Notes.
- Disconnect the battery.
- Remove headliner. Refer to => [ Headliner ] Headliner
- Place a flat O-ring pliers into the clip openings - 1 - and carefully remove the clips out of the opening in the body.
• The clips are covered by straps. Fold the straps up before removing the clips.
- Remove the clips - 2 -, - 3 - and - 4 -, as described, out of the body.
If one of the four clips were damaged while removing, the side curtain airbag must be replaced!
Electrostatic discharges can lead to unintended deployment of the airbag. Therefore, the technician must discharge static electricity from the body before disconnecting the ignition and ground wiring. This is done, for example, by briefly touching the vehicle body or the door striker pin.
- Release the connector lock - 5 - and disconnect the connector from the side curtain air bag.
- Remove the bolt - 1 - (4.5 Nm). As am alternative, the side curtain airbag can be secured in this position with a metal eye and a locking pin.
- Remove the bolts - 2 - and - 3 - (3 Nm).
- Remove side curtain airbag from mounts in body.
Installing
There is a line on the side curtain airbag. This line must be straight after installing. Do not twist.
- Install in reverse order of removal.
- Switch on ignition.
Make sure that no persons are in the vehicle.
- Connect the battery.
