Engine: Application and ID

Engine Number

The engine number ("engine code" and "serial number") are located at the front of the engine/transmission joint.

There is also a label located on the upper timing chain cover with the "engine code" and "serial number".

The engine code letters are also located on the vehicle data label.

The data label is located, in the customer service plan as well as on the vehicle in the spare tire wheel well or on the luggage compartment floor.

The engine number consists of up to nine characters (alphanumeric).

The first part (maximum 4 letters) represents the "engine code", the second (six digit) is the "serial number".

If more than 999,999 engines with the same engine code are produced, the first of the six characters is replaced with a letter.

Vehicles with Four Digit Engine Code

Four digit engine codes beginning with the letter "C" are used.

The first three digits describe the mechanical structure of the engine and are still stamped on the engine, as before.

The fourth digit describes the engine output and torque and depends on the Engine Control Module (ECM).

The four digit engine code is on the type plate, the vehicle data label and on the ECM.

Vehicles for some countries do not have a type plate. Installed locations for the vehicle data label and the type plate.
