Engine, Installing

Install in reverse order of removal. When doing this note the following:

Servicing the Clutch:

Vehicles with a manual transmission.

Vehicles with a Direct Shift Gearbox (DSG).

- Make sure the alignment sleeves for the engine to transmission are installed in the cylinder block. Install them if necessary.

- Make sure there is enough clearance to the engine and transmission mounts and radiator when installing the engine/transmission subassembly.

- Adjust the engine/transmission mounts if necessary. Refer to => [ Engine and Transmission Mount, Adjusting ] Engine and Transmission Mount, Adjusting.

Engine/transmission mount tightening specifications, refer to => [ Engine and Transmission Mount Overview ] Engine and Transmission Mount Overview.

Electrical connections and routings.

Vehicles with a Manual Transmission:

- Install the clutch hydraulic line.

- Install the transmission shift mechanism and adjust it, if necessary.

Vehicles with a DSG:

- Install the transmission selector lever cable and adjust it, if necessary.

Continuation for All Vehicles:

The additional numbered steps must be followed to ensure the particulate filter with the NOx reduction catalytic converter is installed correctly:

Make sure the particulate filter is not under stress when installed.

Always replace self-locking nuts, seals, gaskets and clamps.


The decoupling elements between the particulate filter and NOx reduction catalytic converter can be damaged. When removing and installing:

Do not bend the decoupling element more than 10°.

Do not stretch the decoupling element.

Do not damage the wire mesh on the decoupling element.

Secure the decoupling element from overbending using the transportation lock (T10404).

- Install the particulate filter with NOx reduction catalytic converter and the Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) filter. Refer to => [ Particulate Filter with NOx Reduction Catalytic Converter ] Service and Repair.

- Install the drive axles to the transmission.

- Install the right drive axle heat shield and bolts - arrows -.






- Install the lock carrier.

- Secure the refrigerant lines to the Air Conditioning (A/C) compressor and condenser without tension.

- Charge the A/C system.

- Install the battery tray and battery.

- Observe the notes after connecting the battery.

- Fill with coolant. Refer to => [ Draining and Filling ] Draining and Filling.

- Fill the fuel system. Refer to => [ Fuel System, Filling and Bleeding ] Fuel System, Filling and Bleeding.

- Check the diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) memories of all control modules and erase all DTC entries which may have occurred during the reassembly. Refer to "Vehicle Self-Diagnosis" in the vehicle diagnostic tester.

- Check the headlamp adjustment and adjust if necessary.
