Passenger Airbag
Passenger Airbag
"Advanced Airbag System" (only for USA/Canada)
"Advanced Airbag System" refers to an airbag module with two airbag stages which are deployed depending on the severity of the accident. For less severe crashes, the second stage is not deployed.
• Airbag modules in which only the first stage has been deployed can cause severe injuries by deployment of the second stage.
• Always read the General Safety Precautions before working on airbags, belt tensioners and battery cut-out units (pyrotechnical components). Refer to => [ Airbag, Belt Tensioner and Battery Cut-Out Units, General Safety Precautions ] Airbag, Belt Tensioner and Battery Cut-Out Units, General Safety Precautions.
• Note the special instructions for the driver and passenger airbags. Refer to => [ Driver and Passenger Airbag, Special Notes ] Driver and Passenger Airbag, Special Notes.
At this time, there is no possibility of checking whether the second stage has been deployed definitively. For this reason, such airbag modules must be returned to original packaging for proper recycling/disposal in accordance with national legislation. Direct questions to your importer!
Disposal of undeployed airbag units as industrial waste/garbage is not permissible!
Removing
Always read the General Safety Precautions before working on airbags, belt tensioners and battery cut-out units (pyrotechnical components). Refer to => [ Airbag, Belt Tensioner and Battery Cut-Out Units, General Safety Precautions ] Airbag, Belt Tensioner and Battery Cut-Out Units, General Safety Precautions.
Note the special instructions for the driver and passenger airbags. Refer to => [ Driver and Passenger Airbag, Special Notes ] Driver and Passenger Airbag, Special Notes.
- Disconnect the battery.
- Remove side instrument panel cover => [ Instrument Panel Side Covers ] Instrument Panel Side Covers.
- Remove center A-pillar trim => [ Center A-Pillar Trim ] Center A-pillar Trim.
- Remove center cover.
- Remove glove compartment => [ Glove Compartment ] Glove Compartment.
Electrostatic discharges can lead to unintended deployment of the airbag. Therefore, mechanic must electrostatic discharge him-/herself before disconnecting harness connector. This is done, for example, by briefly grasping the chassis or door striker.
- Disconnect wiring harness from front passenger side airbag.
- Remove the two bolts - 1 - (9 Nm).
- Loosen the two bolts - 2 - and - 3 - respectively and turn the bolts 3 turns.
- Remove the bracket - 6 - by removing the bolts - 7 - (9 Nm).
- Now remove bolts - 2 - and - 3 - (9 Nm).
- Remove front passenger's airbag and brackets - 4 - and - 5 - from mounts.
Installing
- Install in reverse order of removal.
• If the passenger airbag housing is made of plastic, then use locking compound D 197 300 A2 to install the bolts - 2 - and - 3 - (9 Nm).
Check whether an additional ground cable must be routed in the vehicle:
If a passenger airbag is replaced, an additional ground cable must be routed in the vehicle in some cases.
• The example shows a single-stage airbag module. For dual-stage airbag modules, the evaluation as to whether an additional ground cable must be routed in the vehicle is done similarly.
- Check whether a ground cable is routed on the passenger airbag housing:
• With a passenger airbag with ground line - 1 -, the wiring harness - 2 - is a three-conductor harness, and in addition, another cable - 3 - is secured on the threaded pins - 4 -.
• With a passenger airbag without ground line - 5 -, the wiring harness - 6 - is a two-connector harness and no additional cable is secured on the threaded pins - 7 -.
On a passenger airbag without ground cable, route an additional ground cable in vehicle:
• For the following work, use a cable (cross section 1 mm, length 600 mm) from the Wiring Harness Repair Kit (VAS 1978) or Wiring Harness Repair Kit (VAS 1978A).
- Secure end of ground line with bolt - 1 - on right side of passenger airbag.
- Route ground line correctly to right side of passenger footwell.
• Lengthen the ground cable as needed with suitable instruments from the Wiring Harness Repair Kit (VAS 1978) or the Wiring Harness Repair Kit (VAS 1978A).
- Secure other end of ground cable to ground pin - 2 -.
- Switch on ignition.
Make sure no one is in the vehicle.
- Connect vehicle battery.
