(Determine adjustment shim for input shaft)
Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
• Dial gauge holder (VW 387)
• Magnetic plate 50MM dia. (VW 385/17)
• Thrust pad (VW 510)
• Thrust pad (VW 447 i)
• Punch (VW 407)
• Torque wrench 5 to 50 Nm (V.A.G 1331)
• Transmission support (VW 353)
• Dial gauge
It is only necessary to readjust input shaft if following components are replaced:
• Transmission housing
• Clutch housing
• Input shaft
• Drive gear for 4th gear
or
• Tapered roller bearing
Adjustment overview => [ Adjustment Overview ] Adjustment Overview.
Requirement
• Sealing surfaces of clutch and transmission housings must be cleaned of sealant.
- Press tapered roller bearing outer race without adjustment shim into clutch housing until stop.
- Install input shaft in clutch housing and install transmission housing. Tighten hex bolts to 25 Nm + an additional 90°.
- Install measuring device and dial gauge into clutch housing (large tapered roller bearing in transmission housing).
- Rotate input shaft before measuring procedure so that tapered roller bearing settles.
- Set dial gauge to "0" with 1 mm preload.
• This procedure must be repeated for each subsequent measurement, otherwise the dial gauge will not return to the initial position.
- Push input shaft in direction of dial gauge in direction of - arrow -.
- Read play on dial indicator and note (example 1.21).
• Dial gauge does not return to initial position.
- Determine thickness of adjustment shim from table => [ Adjustment Shim Table ] , (example 1.175).
- Remove input shaft and press tapered roller bearing outer race out of transmission housing using thrust pad (VW 447 i).
- Press tapered roller bearing outer race together with 1.175 adjustment shim into transmission housing using thrust pad (VW 510 ).
- Install transmission housing and tighten hex bolt to 25 Nm + an additional 90°.

Performing Measurement Check
- Install measuring device and dial gauge.
- Rotate input shaft so that tapered roller bearings settle.
- Press input shaft in direction of - arrow -.
- Bearing play should be min. 0.01 to max. 0.09 mm.
• If the bearing play cannot be measured, but input shaft play is perceptible and the input shaft turns freely, the adjustment is also acceptable.
