Transmission and Engine, Separating and Assembling
Transmission and Engine, Separating and Assembling
Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
• Shackle (10 - 222 A /12)
• Shop crane (VAS 6100)
• Vehicles with automatic transmissions: SW 18 socket (T10179)
• Vehicles with automatic transmissions: Assembly tool (V/175)
• Vehicles with automatic transmissions: Multi-point socket (T10035)
Separate the transmission from the engine:
Requirement
• Engine/transmission assembly removed and mounted on engine/transmission support (T10359).
- Remove the starter. Starter, Removing and Installing.
Automatic transmission and DSG(R)
- If present, disconnect the coolant hoses from the transmission oil cooler and seal off the openings.
With AWD
- Remove the bevel box (automatic transmission).
- Remove the bevel box (manual transmission).
All
- Disconnect and free up all electrical connections from the transmission to the engine.
- Mount the transmission to the workshop crane using the Shackles (10 - 222 A /12) but do not lift it.
- Remove the upper engine/transmission connecting bolts.
Manual transmission and DSG(R)
- Before removing the last connecting bolts, support the transmission with the workshop crane.
- Remove the lower engine/transmission connecting bolts.
- Separate the transmission from the engine; when doing this, guide the transmission.
Automatic Transmission
Mount the bolts using the Multi-Point Socket (T10179). When tightening, observe the lower tightening specification => Automatic Transmission 09G, 6-speed Transmission, Removing and Installing.
The Multi-Point Socket (T10035) makes the assembling easier.
- For safety, first install a screw which is easily accessible.
- Begin with both lower screws.
The hole for removing the torque converter nuts is located on the back side of the engine and is covered with a rubber cap.
- Remove this cap.
- Remove the six - torque converter nuts - using Socket SW15 (V/175).
• Carefully turn the engine further!
• When installing, be especially mindful of the engine while guiding the transmission to the engine. The starter ring gear can be held steady from the outside using a screwdriver. When installing, the studs are located in the drive plate holes.
- Before removing the last connecting bolt, support the transmission with the workshop crane.
- Now remove the last bolt.
- Separate the transmission from the engine; when doing this, guide the transmission.
• Pay attention to the torque converter. It must be removed together with the transmission.
- During transport, secure the converter - arrow - from falling out, for example, with a wire - A -.
Assembling
Assembly is performed in reverse order of removal; pay attention to the tightening specifications in each Repair Information under Transmission, Removing and Installing.
