Removal and Replacement
Rocker Arm and Shaft
Removing
The rocker arm shafts are hollow and are used as oil passages. The rocker arm shaft on the right side of the engine has an oil passage hole from the cylinder head to the third rocker shaft support. The rocker arm shaft on the left side of the engine has an oil passage hole from the cylinder head to the second rocker shaft support.
- Remove the camshaft cover(s). Refer to one of the following:
• Left camshaft cover. Refer to => [ Left Camshaft Cover ] Left Camshaft Cover.
• Right camshaft cover. Refer to => [ Right Camshaft Cover ] Right Camshaft Cover.
- Identify the rocker arm assembly and rocker arms before disassembly.
- Remove the rocker arm bolts.
- Remove the rocker arm.
• To prevent air ingestion into the lash adjusters, avoid turning the rocker arm upside down.
Do not allow the rocker arm to rest on the lash adjusters, as damage may occur to the lash adjusters and/or plastic retainers.
Installing
• The rocker arm and shaft can be installed either prior to or after (preferred) cylinder head installation.
- Rotate the camshafts to the position shown above. With the camshafts in these positions the lobes are in a neutral position (no load to the valve). This will allow the rocker arm shaft to be tightened into position with little or no valve spring load on it.
- Install the rocker arm and shaft making sure that the identification marks face toward the front of engine for the left cylinder head and toward the rear of the engine for the right cylinder head.
- Tighten the rocker arm shaft bolts in sequence (1 through 10) to 31 Nm (23 ft lbs).
- Install the camshaft covers. Refer to one of the following:
• Left camshaft cover. Refer to => [ Left Camshaft Cover ] Left Camshaft Cover.
• Right camshaft cover. Refer to => [ Right Camshaft Cover ] Right Camshaft Cover.
