Rear Timing Cover

Removing






- Relieve the fuel system pressure. Refer to => [ Fuel System Pressure Release Procedure ] Service and Repair.

- Disconnect the negative battery cable.

- Remove the timing belt. Refer to => [ Timing Belt ] Timing Belt.

- Remove the camshaft sprockets. Refer to => [ Camshaft Sprocket ] Camshaft Sprocket.

- Remove the rear timing belt cover bolts (1,2 , 3 and 5).

- Remove the rear cover (4).

The rear timing belt cover has O-rings to seal the water pump passages to the cylinder block. Do not reuse the O-rings.








- Remove and discard the O-ring seals (1) from the rear of the rear timing belt cover (2).

Installation






- Clean rear timing belt cover O-ring sealing surfaces and grooves.

- Lubricate the new O-rings (1) with Volkswagen genuine parts dielectric grease or equivalent.

- Install the new O-rings (1) on the cover (1).






- Position the rear timing belt cover (4) to the engine block.

- Tighten the rear timing belt cover bolts (1, 2 , 3 and 5) to :

M10 bolts to 54 Nm (40 ft lbs).

M8 bolts to 28 Nm (21 ft lbs).

M6 bolts to 12 Nm (106 in lbs).

- Install the camshaft sprockets. Refer to => [ Camshaft Sprocket ] Camshaft Sprocket.

- Install the timing belt. Refer to => [ Timing Belt ] Timing Belt.

- Connect the negative battery cable.
