Front Impact Sensor

Front Impact Sensor

To avoid serious or fatal injury on vehicles equipped with airbags, disable the supplemental restraint system before attempting any steering wheel, steering column, airbag, seat belt tensioner, impact sensor, or instrument panel component diagnosis or service. Disconnect the negative battery cable, then wait two minutes for the system capacitor to discharge before performing further diagnosis or service. This is the only sure way to disable the SRS. Failure to take the proper precautions could result in accidental airbag deployment.

To avoid serious or fatal injury, never strike or drop the front impact sensor, as it can damage the impact sensor or affect its calibration. The front impact sensor enables the system to deploy the front SRS components. If an impact sensor is accidentally dropped during service, the sensor must be scrapped and replaced with a new unit. Failure to observe this warning could result in accidental, incomplete, or improper front SRS component deployment.

The front and the third row seating side impact sensors are interchangeable.

Removing

- Disconnect the negative battery cable.

- Wait two minutes for the system capacitor to discharge before further service.

- Access to the front impact sensors is accomplished by reaching behind the front end module carrier (2) from the top of the engine compartment and below the inboard end of the front lamp unit housing (1).

- Disconnect the front end module wire harness connector (5) from the right or left front impact sensor (3).

- Remove the screw (4) securing the front impact sensor to the back (engine compartment side) of the front end module carrier below and inboard end of the front lamp unit housing.

- Pull the front impact sensor straight back from the mounting location in order to disengage the anti-rotation pin on the base of the sensor from the clearance hole in the front end module carrier.

- Remove the right or left front impact sensor.

Installing

- Access to the front impact sensors is accomplished by reaching behind the front end module carrier (2) from the top of the engine compartment and below the inboard end of the front lamp unit housing (1).

- Position the right or left front impact sensor (3) into the engine compartment.

- Align and insert the anti-rotation pin on the base of the sensor into the clearance hole in the front end module carrier.

- Install and tighten the screw (4) securing the front impact sensor to the front end module carrier.

- Connect the front end module wire harness connector (5) to the connector receptacle of the front impact sensor.

- Perform the SRS verification test procedure.
