Steering Column Intermediate Shaft






Steering Column Intermediate Shaft

Removing

- Reposition the floor carpeting to access the steering column coupling at the base of the column.


- Position the front wheels of vehicle and steering wheel in the straight-ahead position.

- Install steering wheel holder locking steering wheel in straight-ahead position.






- Remove the intermediate shaft coupling bolt (1).

- Separate the intermediate shaft (2) at the base of the column from the intermediate shaft extension (3).






- Remove fasteners (1) securing shaft seal and cover (2) in place, then lift shaft seal and cover from intermediate shaft extension (4) and floor pan.

- Raise and support vehicle.






- Remove pinch bolt (1) securing intermediate shaft extension (2) to steering gear shaft (3).

- Slide intermediate shaft extension (2) off steering gear shaft (3).

Installing






- Match intermediate shaft extension (2) to steering gear shaft (3), then slide extension onto shaft.

- Install pinch bolt (1) securing intermediate shaft extension (2) to steering gear shaft (3). Tighten pinch bolt to 42 Nm (31 ft lbs).

- Lower vehicle.






- Place shaft seal and cover (2) over mounting studs on floor pan and securely install fasteners. Make sure cover extends down over top of steering gear housing.






- Verify the front wheels of vehicle are in the straight-ahead position.

- Collapse the intermediate shaft (2). Center it over the shaft extension (3), lining up the ends, then slide the intermediate shaft onto the shaft extension.

- Install the intermediate shaft coupling bolt (1). Tighten the bolt to 42 Nm (31 ft lbs).

- Reposition the floor carpet in place.


- Remove steering wheel holder.

- Road test vehicle to ensure proper operation of steering.
