Bevel Box Gear Oil, Checking and Filling
Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
• Torque Wrench (5-50 Nm) (V.A.G 1331)
• Charging Device F/Haldex 2 Couplings (VAS 6291)
• Adapter for Oil Filling (VAS 6291/2)
• It is necessary to use adapter (VAS 6262/6) on some oil containers.
The bevel box is attached to the side of the transmission and has it own fluid system.
For the bevel box gear oil specification, refer to the Fluid Capacity Tables
Checking
Requirements:
• The bevel box must be in its installed location.
- Remove the noise insulation.
- Place the a drip tray below.
• Cover the area below the oil filler plug - arrow - with a cloth.
- Remove the filler plug - arrow - from the bevel box.
It is necessary to replace the filler plug - arrow -.
Fluid level is correct if the bevel box is filled with fluid up to the bottom edge of the oil filler hole.
If fluid comes in contact with the bevel box, clean the bevel box carefully.
- Add fluid if necessary.
- Install the new filler plug - arrow -.
- Tighten the plug to specification.
Filling
Requirements:
• The vehicle must be horizontal.
- Use the charging device f/haldex 2 couplings (VAS 6291) to add oil:
- Route the charging device f/haldex 2 couplings (VAS 6291) hose behind the right drive axle and out through the right wheel housing.
• Cover the area below the filler plug - arrow - with a cloth.
- Remove the filler plug - arrow - from the bevel box.
- Install the adapter for oil filling (VAS 6291/2) - A -.
- You can also use a socket wrench.
- arrow - = 5 mm socket wrench, commercially available
- Install the elbow - B - to the adapter - A -.
• The hose must not hang through.
- Close the lever - arrow -.
- Attach the fluid container - A - to the charging device f/haldex 2 couplings (VAS 6291).
- Open the lever - arrow - and hold the fluid container as illustrated.
The bevel box is now filled.
- Lift the vehicle after a few minutes.
• Fluid should leak out of the adapter - A - if the bevel box is filled correctly.
• If no fluid is leaking, lower the vehicle and perform the filling procedure again.
- Lift the vehicle.
- If fluid leaks from adapter - A -, set down the fluid container (for example, on a tool cart).
A portion of the excess fluid runs back into the container.
- When the fluid stops draining back, press the button in the - direction of the arrow - and remove the charging device f/haldex 2 couplings.
- Remove the adapter (VAS 6291/2)
- Install the filler plug.
- Make sure there is still fluid in the charging device f/haldex 2 couplings (VAS 6291) hose.
- Start the engine, engage each gear and let the transmission turn for approximately minutes.
- Turn off the engine and remove the filler plug.
- If necessary, fill again with fluid up to the lower edge of the filler hole.
- Install a new filler plug - arrow -.
- Tighten the filler plug to specification.
If fluid comes in contact with the bevel box, remove the bevel box carefully.
- Install the noise insulation.
