Fuel Tank, Draining
Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
• Fuel Extracting Device (VAS 5190)
• Wrench (T10202)
• Assembly Tool (T10118)
Procedure
- Read the safety precautions before beginning work. Refer to => [ Safety Precautions ] Fuel Supply.
- Open the fuel tank flap.
- Insert the suction hose - arrow - from the (VAS 5190) about 170 to 180 cm into the fuel filler neck and extract the fuel.
• When no more fuel can be extracted the tank is emptied only enough for the fuel delivery unit flange to be opened without danger. The tank may be removed while containing the remaining fuel.
• If work must be performed on the fuel pumps or fuel tank sensors, proceed as follows:
- Remove the rear bench seat.
- Disconnect the fuel pump and tank sensor connector - 4 -.
- Disconnect the return line - 1 -, supply line - 2 - and the auxiliary heater supply line - 3 - if necessary from the right flange.
• Release the connection by pressing button on hose coupling.
- Remove the locking ring using wrench (T10202).
- Carefully pry out the flange and raise it slightly.
- Insert the suction hose from the (VAS 5190) as far as possible in the right and left sides of the fuel tank and extract the fuel.
- Follow the procedure described above when working on the left side of the fuel tank.
- When breather line is pulled off, hose coupling button often cannot be pressed in. To do this, insert (T10118).
For additional work on components inside of fuel tank, flanges may remain removed.
If fuel tank only needed to be emptied, install the flange again.
- First check that the flange seals are properly seated.
• If seals are swollen with fuel, always replace.
- Install the flange with the locating tab in the direction of travel - arrow -.
- Tighten the left and right locking rings using (T10202) to 145 Nm.
• Do not interchange the supply and return lines. The return line is blue - 1 - and the supply line is black - 2 -.
• Ensure the fuel hoses are securely seated.
