Engine and Transmission, Separating

Engine and Transmission, Separating

=> [ with a Automatic Transmission ]

=> [ with a Manual Transmission ]

Conditions

The engine/transmission assembly is removed and installed on the engine support (T10359).

with a Automatic Transmission

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required

Hose Clamps up to 40 mm (3094)

Crankshaft Adapter (T03003)

Socket SW15 (V/175)

Hose Clamps up to 25 mm Dia. (3094)

Shackle (10-222 A/12)

Shop Crane - Load Cap = 700-1200 KG (VAS 6100)

Torque Wrench (40-200 Nm) (V.A.G 1332)

Note the following whenever working inside the engine compartment due to limited space:

Route all lines and wires in their original locations.

Ensure sufficient clearance to all moving or hot components.

Separating

- Remove the bracket - 1 - from the upper starter bolt - arrow -.

- Remove the upper starter bolt.

Mark the coolant hoses on the transmission fluid cooler to prevent mixing them up when reinstalling them again later.

- Clamp off the coolant hoses to the cooler using the hose clamps up to 25 mm dia. (3094) and the hose clamps up to 40 mm (3093).

- Open the spring clamps - A - and pull the coolant hoses - B and C - off the cooler.

- Seal the coolant hoses and connections with plugs from the engine bung set (VAS 6122).

- Remove the upper transmission to engine bolts - arrows - using a 12 point swivel socket - A -.

- Turn the cap - 1 - in the - direction of the arrow - and remove it.

- Remove the 6 torque converter nuts - arrow - using the socket SW15 (V/175).

- Rotate the engine in engine rotation direction - arrow - a 60° additional turn using the crankshaft adapter (T03003).

The torque converter will be pulled out when the transmission is separated from the engine if all 6 nuts are not removed!

Counter hold the vibration damper using the crankshaft adapter (T03003) when loosening the nuts for the torque converter.

- Remove the selector lever cable bracket from the transmission.

- Install the shackle (10-222 A/12) to the transmission and install the shop crane - load cap = 700-1200 KG (VAS 6100) to the shackle.

- Remove the last transmission/engine bolt.

- Separate the transmission from the engine. Push the torque converter out of the engine drive plate at the same time.

Secure the torque converter from falling out.

Assembling

Assembly is performed in reverse the order of separating; pay attention to the tightening specifications.

Separating

- Remove the starter.

- Disconnect all electrical connections from the transmission to the engine and free them up.

- Install the shackle (10-222 A/12) to the transmission and install the shop crane - load cap = 700-1200 KG (VAS 6100) to the shackle, but do not lift it.

- Remove the upper engine/transmission bolts.

- Tension the transmission using the shop crane and remove the last bolts.

- Remove the lower engine/transmission bolts.

- Separate the transmission from the engine; when doing this, guide the transmission.
