Drive Axle, Triple Roller Joint AAR3300i, Mounted on Stub Shaft
Drive Axle, Triple Roller Joint AAR3300i, Mounted on Stub Shaft
Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
• Slide Hammer - Complete Set (VW 771)
• Tensioning Strap (T10038)
• Puller (T10382)
• Torque Wrench (40-200 Nm) (V.A.G 1332)
• Digital Torque Wrench (V.A.G 1756)
When disassembling and performing repairs on vehicle, the drive axles must not be allowed to hang down and contact the stops in the joint by overflexing.
Removing
- Loosen the drive axle to wheel hub bolt. Refer to one of the following:
=> [ Drive Axle Bolt Loosening and Tightening, Twelve Point Bolt with Ribs ] Drive Axle Bolt Loosening and Tightening, Twelve Point Bolt with Ribs.
=> [ Drive Axle Bolt Loosening and Tightening, Twelve Point Bolt without Ribs ] Drive Axle Bolt Loosening and Tightening, Twelve Point Bolt without Ribs.
The wheel bearing must not be under a load while the drive axle bolt is loose.
If the wheel bearings are under the load of the vehicle weight, the wheel bearing will be damaged. This reduces the service life of the wheel bearings.
The drive axle bolt may be loosened a maximum of 90° when the vehicle is sitting on its wheels.
Vehicles without a drive axle must not be moved, otherwise the wheel bearing will be damaged. If a vehicle must be moved, be sure to note the following:
• Install an outer joint in place of the drive axle.
• Tighten the outer joint to 120 Nm.
- Remove the lower noise insulation.
- Remove the wheel.
- Remove the ball joint nuts - arrows -.
- Separate the ball joint from the control arm.
- Slide the outer Constant Velocity (CV) joint out of the wheel hub by hand.
- Secure the drive axle from falling down.
- Insert the puller (T10382) to the joint piece.
For the joint piece - 1 -, the surface - arrow - on the plate (T10382/2) must face the spindles (T10382/2).
- Install the puller (T10382) to the slide hammer (VW 771/1/1).
• In order to remove the drive axle from the transmission using the puller (T10382) , the strut and all its components must be pulled to the back.
- Pull the strut and its components back as far as possible using the tensioning strap (T10038) secure it, for example, to the hoist arm, until the puller (T10382) can be installed parallel to the drive axle.
- Install the puller (T10382) and remove the drive axle.
- Remove the drive axle from the vehicle.
Installing
Remove any paint residue and/or corrosion for the threads/splines of the outer CV joint.
- Install the new circlip onto the stub shaft groove on the transmission.
- Position the inner splines of the joint piece with the outer splines of the transmission.
- Grasp the drive axle by hand and push the joint piece onto the transmission stub shaft up to the stop.
- Now, with a quick pushing motion, insert the joint piece onto the transmission stub shaft.
• Do not use a hammer or other knocking tool under any circumstances!
- Check the drive axle for secure fitting on the transmission stub shaft by pulling the joint piece against the resistance of the circlip.
For this check, do not pull on the drive axle its self, but rather only on the joint piece.
- Remove the tensioning strap (T10038)
- Insert the outer CV joint as far as possible into the wheel hub splines.
- Install the ball joint to the control arm and install the nuts - arrows -.
• Make sure that the ball joint boot is not damaged or twisted.
- Install the lower noise insulation.
- Tighten the drive axle to wheel hub bolts.
The vehicle must not rest on its wheels when doing so.
With the bolt loosened, the wheel bearing can be damaged by the vehicle weight.
Differences Between a Twelve Point Bolt With Ribs and a Bolt Without Ribs
The contact surfaces - arrows A and B - are different on the two bolts.

II Twelve point bolt without ribs - arrow B -
- Install the wheel and tighten the wheel bolts. Refer to => [ Wheel Bolt Tightening Specifications ] [1][2]Specifications.
