Shift Mechanism, from 11.06

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required

Thrust Block (T10083)

Disassembly

- Remove the shift mechanism. Refer to => [ Shift Mechanism ] Shift Mechanism.

- Bend the taps - arrows - on the shift mechanism base plate down with a screwdriver and remove the base plate (the tabs in the front area of the base plate are not shown).






- Remove the gasket from shift housing.

- Remove the shift and selector cables from the shift housing. Refer to => [ Shift Lever and Housing, from 11.06 ] Shift Mechanism Overviews.

- Raise the upper spring leg - A - over the selector bracket tab.

- Using a screwdriver, press the bearing shell notches - arrows - in the direction of the shift lever guide bearing; break the notches, if necessary.






- Pry out the bearing shell - A - with the shift lever guide - B - from the shift housing.

- Then, press the bearing shell off the shift lever guide bearing and remove.






Observe the guides - A - in subsequent steps.

They must not break off.



- Raise the lower spring leg - arrow 1 - onto the shoulder of the selector bracket.

- Now, raise the shift lever guide up as far as the stop and remove the ball studs from the selector bracket - arrow 2 -.






- Turn the shift lever in the - direction of arrow 1 -.






The pins - arrow 2 - must be in the shift housing opening.

- Move the shift lever guide and the shift lever in the - direction of arrow 3 -.

Assembly


The lower spring leg (- arrow 1 - => upper illustration) can spring down uncontrolled from the selector bracket shoulder during subsequent handling.

- Carefully press the lower spring leg down from the selector bracket shoulder.

The spring legs then twist "diagonally" with a loud noise.

- Turn both spring legs to the right and release the tension on the legs - A and B -.

The legs - A and B - must face in the opposite direction.






- Insert the shift lever guide in the shift housing.






The pins - arrow 1 - are still located in the shift housing opening.

- Turn the shift lever guide in the - direction of arrow 2 - until the ball head pin - A - is above the opening in the shift housing.

- Install the shift housing with the shift lever guide into the larger depression - arrow - in the thrust block (T10083).






The shift lever guide must project out of the shift housing as far as the stop.






The selector bracket is only partially shown to provide a better illustration.

- Insert the spring leg - A - from above into the guide.

- Pull the spring leg - B - down and insert it near the guide (in the direction of the ball head).

Observe the guides (see the upper illustration) in subsequent steps.

They must not break off.

- Carefully remove the shift housing with the shift lever guide from the thrust block (T10083).

- Move the selector bracket all the way to the rear (opposite mounting holes for shift and selector cable) - arrow 1 -.






- Lubricate the ball head pins.

- Press the ball head pins into the selector bracket - arrow 2 -.

The guides - A - and the tabs - B - must not be damaged.

- Install the shift housing with the shift lever guide into the larger depression - arrow - in the thrust block (T10083).






The shift lever guide must project out of the selector housing as far as the stop.






- Raise the upper spring leg - A - over the selector bracket pins.

Use a new bearing shell - B -.

- Lubricate the bearing shell and shift lever guide bearing.

- Press the bearing shell onto the shift lever guide bearing as far as the stop.

- Remove the shift mechanism from the thrust block (T10083).

- Insert the lower spring leg - C - into the guide.

- Raise the upper spring leg - A - over the selector bracket pins into the guide.

- Press the bearing shell into the shift housing - arrows -.

All four retaining tabs must engage.

- Install the shift lever, shift cable, selector cable and base plate. Refer to => [ Shift Mechanism, from 11.06 ] Shift Mechanism, From 11.06.

- Install the shift mechanism. Refer to => [ Shift Mechanism ] Shift Mechanism.
