Rear Axle Drum Brake Overview

After replacing the drum brakes, depress brake pedal firmly several times with vehicle stationary so that the brake pads are properly seated in their normal operating position.

Use Brake filling and bleeding equipment (VAS 5234) to extract brake fluid from brake fluid reservoir.

The Brake pedal actuator (V.A.G1869/2) should be installed before removing a brake cylinder or separating a brake hose (release some of the pressure first).






1 Axle Beam

Removing and installing, refer to.

2 Parking Brake Cable

Removing and installing, refer to => [ Parking Brake Cable, Drum Brake ] Parking Brake Cable, Drum Brake.

Adjusting, refer to=> [ Parking Brake, Adjusting, with Drum Brake ] Parking Brake, Adjusting, with Drum Brake.

For the correct allocation, refer to Electronic Parts Catalog (ETKA).

3 Bolt

8 Nm

4 Rear ABS Wheel Speed Sensor

Removing and installing, refer to => [ Rear Torsion Beam Axle ABS Components Overview, with Drum Brake ] Rear Torsion Beam Axle ABS Components Overview, with Drum Brake.

Clean the inside of the hole and coat it with hot bolt paste (G 052 112 A3) before installing the sensor.

5 Stub Axle

Removing and installing, refer to.

6 Brake Carrier With Brake Shoes

Minimum brake pad thickness: 2.5 mm.

Checking thickness, refer to Maintenance Procedures.

Set back before removing brake drum. Refer to=> [ Reset Rear Drum Brake ] Procedures.

Brake Carrier, removing and installing, refer to => [ Brake Carrier ] Brake Carrier.

Brake Shoes, removing and installing, refer to => [ Brake Shoes ] Brake Shoes.

For the correct allocation, refer to Maintenance Procedures.

7 Bolt

30 Nm + 90°

Quantity: 4

Always replace if removed.

8 Wheel Bearing Unit

Removing and installing, refer to.

9 Bolt

180 Nm + 180°

Always replace if removed.

For the correct allocation, refer to Electronic Parts Catalog (ETKA).

10 Cover

Removing and installing, refer to.

For the correct allocation, refer to Maintenance Procedures.

11 Brake Drum

Brake drum diameter: 230 mm.

Wear limit: 231.5 mm

Set back before removing brake drum. Refer to=> [ Reset Rear Drum Brake ] Procedures.

Removing and installing, refer to => [ Brake Drum ] Brake Drum.

Clean carefully and check for wear and damage, make sure the dimensions are correct and that the brake surface is perfect.
