Brake Cylinder
Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
• Brake Pedal Actuator (V.A.G 1869/2)
• Torque Wrench (V.A.G 1331)
• After replacing the brake cylinder, the brake pads and the brake shoes, press the brake pedal once so that the brake shoes are properly seated.
• Use Brake filling and bleeding equipment (VAS 5234) to extract brake fluid from brake fluid reservoir.
• Before removing a brake cylinder, a brake carrier or disconnecting a brake hose from the brake cylinder, the brake pedal actuator (V.A.G 1869/2) should be installed (relieve pressure when doing this).
Removing
- Loosen the wheel bolts.
- Raise the vehicle.
- Remove the wheel.
- Reset brake. Refer to => [ Reset Rear Drum Brake ] Procedures.
- Remove the brake drum. Refer to => [ Brake Drum ] Brake Drum.
- Attach the bleeder bottle bleed hose - 1 - to the bleed valve on the brake cylinder and open the bleed valve.
- Insert (V.A.G 1869/2).
- Close the bleed valve and remove the bleeder bottle.
- Remove the brake line tube fitting - 2 - from the brake cylinder.
- Immediately seal brake lines and threaded holes with sealing plugs (1H0 698 311 A).
- Remove the brake cylinder bolt - 1 - from the brake carrier and remove the brake cylinder.
Cleaning
Do not blow brake system using compressed air, the dust produced is harmful to health!
• Use only appropriate solvents for cleaning brake system.
Installing
Install in reverse order of removal. Note the following:
- Bleed the brake system. Refer to => [ Brake System, Bleeding ] Service and Repair.
- Install the wheel and tighten.
- Adjust parking brake. Refer to=> [ Parking Brake, Adjusting, with Drum Brake ] Parking Brake, Adjusting, with Drum Brake.
