Engine Lubrication: Service and Repair
Lubrication System Overview
• If large quantities of metal particles or abraded material are detected during engine repairs, it may mean the crankshaft or rod bearings are damaged. To prevent further damage, perform the following steps after the repair:
• Clean the oil passages.
• Replace the oil spray jets.
• Replace the oil cooler.
• Replace the oil filter.
• The oil level must not go above the MAX mark - danger of causing damage to the catalytic converter!
1 Cylinder Block
2 Reduced Oil Pressure Switch (F378)
• 20 Nm
• Removing and installing, refer to => [ Oil Filter Bracket with Attachments Overview ] Service and Repair.
• Checking, refer to "Guided Fault Finding" in the vehicle diagnostic tester.
3 Oil Pressure Switch (F1)
• 20 Nm
• Removing and installing, refer to => [ Oil Filter Bracket with Attachments Overview ] Service and Repair.
• Checking, refer to "Guided Fault Finding" in the vehicle diagnostic tester.
4 Oil Pressure Regulation Valve (N428)
• Removing and installing, refer to => [ Oil Filter Bracket with Attachments Overview ] Service and Repair.
• Checking, refer to "Guided Fault Finding" in the vehicle diagnostic tester.
5 Oil Pump Timing Chain
6 Bolt
• 20 Nm + 90° (1/4) additional turn.
• Always replace.
7 Oil Pump Sprocket
• Removing and installing, refer to => [ Oil Pump ] Service and Repair.
• The lettering points outward.
• With an anti-twist mechanism.
8 Oil Pump
• Removing and installing, refer to => [ Oil Pump ] Service and Repair.
9 Bolt
• 25 Nm
10 Bolt
• 25 Nm
11 Oil Filter Bracket with Attachments
• Overview, refer to => [ Oil Filter Bracket with Attachments Overview ] Service and Repair.
12 Oil Dipstick
• The oil level must not be above the MAX. mark!
13 Retaining Ring
• Clipped into the intake manifold.
14 Guide Tube
15 Pre-warmer
• Not available in the Us/Canadian market.
16 Bolt
• 25 Nm
17 O-ring
• Always replace.
18 Seal
• Always replace.
19 Bracket
20 Bolt
• 10 Nm
21 Lower Oil Pan
• Removing and installing, refer to => [ Lower Oil Pan ] Lower Oil Pan.
22 Bolt
• 10 Nm
23 Oil Drain Plug
• 30 Nm
• Always replace.
24 Decoupling Element
• Bolt, 10 Nm.
25 Oil Intake Pipe
26 Bolt
• 25 Nm
27 Upper Oil Pan
• Removing and installing, refer to => [ Upper Oil Pan ] Upper Oil Pan.
28 O-ring
• Always replace
