Balance Shaft Module
=> [ New Balance Shaft Assembly, Installing ]
=> [ Used Balance Shaft Module, Installing ]
Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
• Crankshaft Stop (T10050)
Removing
- Remove the oil dipstick.
- Remove the vibration damper. Refer to => [ Ribbed Belt and Tensioner Overview ] Ribbed Belt and Tensioner Overview.
Components could be destroyed by the toothed belt jumping off.
• Only rotate the crankshaft in engine rotation direction.
- Rotate the crankshaft using the crankshaft toothed belt gear bolt until the crankshaft is at Top Dead Center (TDC).
- Secure the crankshaft using the crankshaft stop (T10050).
• The marks on the toothed belt gear - 2 - and on the crankshaft stop - 1 - must align - arrow -. The pin on the crankshaft stop must fit in the hole in the sealing flange.
• The crankshaft stop can be pushed onto the toothed belt gear only from the front side of the splines.
- Remove the oil pan. Refer to => [ Oil Pan ] Oil Pan.
- Remove the bolts in sequence - 8 through 1 - and - 6 through 1 - and remove the balance shaft module and oil pump.
Balance Shaft Module with 8 Bolts
Balance Shaft Module with 6 Bolts
Used Balance Shaft Module, Installing
Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
• Locking Tool (T10255)
• Bits (T10099)
Installing
If the intermediate sprocket bolt was loosened, the drive pinion on the crankshaft was replaced or the crankshaft was removed, a new intermediate sprocket with coating must be installed and the hub - item 15 - including the bolt - item 14 - in => [ Oil Pan, Pump and Balance Shaft Module Overview ] Oil Pan, Pump and Balance Shaft Module Overview and axial bearing disc must be replaced. Otherwise the backlash will be incorrect. For the installation procedure, refer to => [ New Balance Shaft Assembly, Installing ].
• If a used balance shaft module is being installed, but neither the spur gear on the crankshaft nor the crankshaft were replaced, then proceed as follows. Do not loosen the intermediate sprocket under any circumstances.
• Replace the bolts which have been tightened to an additional torque angle.
- Lock the balance shaft in place using the locking tool (T10255). Rotate the balance shaft if necessary.
• The locking tool pins must engage in the groove on the balance shaft.
- Install the alignment bushings for centering the balance shaft module on the cylinder block if they are missing.
- Mount the balance shaft module on the cylinder block.
• The intermediate shaft must engage in the spur gear on the crankshaft when the balance shaft is secured in place.
• The intermediate sprocket must have a slight angular clearance.
- Tighten the bolts for the balance shaft module as follows:
Balance Shaft Module, with 8 Bolts, Tightening Sequence and Specification
Balance Shaft Module, with 6 Bolts, Tightening Sequence and Specification
- Remove the crankshaft stop (T10050).
Further installation is performed in reverse order. When doing this note the following:
- Install the oil pan. Refer to => [ Oil Pan ] Oil Pan.
- Install the vibration damper. Refer to => [ Ribbed Belt and Tensioner Overview ] Ribbed Belt and Tensioner Overview.
New Balance Shaft Assembly, Installing
Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
• Locking Tool (T10255)
• Bits (T10099)
Procedure
• For the correct tightening specifications, refer to => [ Oil Pan, Pump and Balance Shaft Module Overview ] Oil Pan, Pump and Balance Shaft Module Overview.
• Secure the crankshaft using the crankshaft stop (T10050).
• The balance shaft module spur gear drive must be installed with the correct backlash.
• The new intermediate sprocket has a coating in the correct thickness to make sure the backlash is correct. The coating is on parts of the circumference of the teeth.
• The coating wears off in a short time and the backlash is correct.
• A new balance shaft module must always be installed with a new intermediate sprocket having the coating.
• Replace the bolts which have been tightened to an additional torque angle.
Danger of the axial bearing disc slipping behind the intermediate sprocket.
• Do not loosen the bolt for the intermediate shaft sprocket more than specified when mounting the balance shaft module. Axial bearing disc installed position, refer to => [ Axial Bearing Disc Installed Position ] Oil Pan, Pump and Balance Shaft Module Overview.
- Loosen the bolt - 1 - for the intermediate sprocket approximately 45°.
- Install the alignment bushings for centering the balance shaft module on the cylinder block if they are missing.
- Mount the balance shaft module on the cylinder block.
• Do not damage the coating on the intermediate sprocket.
Balance Shaft Module, with 8 Bolts, Tightening Sequence and Specification
- Tighten the bolts of the balance shaft module as follows:
Balance Shaft Module, with 6 Bolts, Tightening Sequence and Specification
- Tighten the bolts of the balance shaft module as follows:
- Lock the balance shaft in place using the locking tool (T10255). Rotate the balance shaft if necessary.
• The locking tool pins must engage in the groove on the balance shaft.
- Carefully mount the balance shaft chain sprocket on the balance shaft. Push the intermediate sprocket slightly to the side when doing this.
• Do not damage the coating on the intermediate sprocket.
• The threaded holes in the balance shaft should be, if possible, in the center of the oblong holes in toothed gear.
• If the slots on the balance shaft chain sprocket cannot be aligned with the threaded holes in the cover, rotate the sprocket the corresponding number of teeth and position it again.
- Tighten the bolts - arrows - for the balance shaft chain sprocket.
- Remove the locking tool (T10255).
• The following 3 steps must be performed at the same time. A second technician will be needed.
- Press the intermediate sprocket - 3 - forcefully in the - direction of the arrow - into the spur gear splines - 2 - and the balance shaft chain sprocket - 1 - using a wooden block if necessary.
- Turn the balance shaft chain sprocket counterclockwise slightly while doing this.
- Tighten the bolt for the intermediate sprocket.
- Remove the crankshaft stop (T10050).
• The intermediate sprocket must not have any angular clearance after installation. This can be checked by pressing slightly with the hand.
