Airbag Unit with Igniter

The following describes removing and installing the airbag unit inside a multifunction steering wheel.

The screwdriver mentioned in the following should be about 175 mm long and have a blade width of 7 mm.

Removing

The general safety precautions for working on airbag, belt tensioner and battery cut-out units (pyrotechnic components) must be observed. Refer to => [ Pyrotechnic Components Safety Precautions ] Service Precautions.

Observe the special information regarding driver and front passenger airbags. Refer to => [ Airbag Safety Precautions ] Airbag Safety Precautions.

Perform the following:

- Disconnect the battery.

- Lower the steering wheel - 3 - as far as possible.

- Adjust steering wheel depth (reach) - 3 - so it is in the fully extended position.

- Turn the steering wheel - 3 - to the position illustrated.

- Insert a screwdriver all the way into the hole on the back of the steering wheel (approximately. 8 mm).

- Turn the screwdriver toward the driver door - arrow A -. This will unlock the airbag unit - 2 - locking mechanism - 1 - in - direction of arrow B -, on the right side of the steering wheel.

The airbag unit - 2 - must be pulled out of the steering wheel bezel slightly on the upper edge after releasing the retainer on the multifunction steering wheel.

- Turn the steering wheel - 3 - 180° and disconnect the airbag unit - 2 - on the left side of the steering wheel as described.

The airbag unit - 2 - must be pulled out of the steering wheel bezel slightly on the upper edge after releasing the retainer on the multifunction steering wheel.

- Turn the steering wheel - 3 - back to its center position.

- Remove the airbag unit - 2 - from the steering wheel - 3 -.






Electrostatic discharges can lead to unintended deployment of the airbag. Therefore, the technician must discharge static electricity from the body before disconnecting the ignition and ground wiring. This is done, for example, by briefly touching the vehicle body or the door striker pin.

- Release the connector lock on the airbag connector - 1 - and remove it.

- Connect the airbag connector - 1 - with the wiring harness to the back of the airbag unit - 2 -.

Vehicles with a Multifunction Steering Wheel:

- Disconnect the connector - 3 -.

All Vehicles:

- Remove the airbag unit - 2 - from the steering wheel.






Installation

Perform the following:

- Connect the airbag connector - 1 - in the connector. The airbag connector must click when it locks.

Vehicles with a Multifunction Steering Wheel:

- Connect the connector - 3 -.

All Vehicles:

- Push the airbag unit - 2 - into the steering wheel.

- Gently pull on the airbag unit - 2 - to make sure the it is locked securely inside steering wheel on the left and right sides.






- Turn on the ignition.

Make sure no one is in the vehicle.

- Connect the battery.
