Head Curtain Airbag

• Removing and installing on the left side of the vehicle is described here. Removing and installing on the right side is identical.

Removing

• The general safety precautions for working on airbag, belt tensioner and battery cut-out units (pyrotechnic components) must be observed. Refer to => [ Pyrotechnic Components Safety Precautions ] Service Precautions.

• Follow the special information regarding head curtain airbag modules. Refer to => [ Head Curtain Airbag Additional Safety Precautions ] Head Curtain Airbag Additional Safety Precautions.

- If equipped, open the sunroof.

- Disconnect the battery.

- Remove sun visors. Refer to => [ Sun Visor ] Sun Visor.

- Remove grab handle (roof). Refer to => [ Roof Grab Handle ] Roof Grab Handle.

- Remove the lamps and switches inside the roof trim panel.

- Remove the upper A-pillar trim.

- Remove the upper B-pillar trim.

- Remove the C-pillar trim.

Perform the following work steps especially carefully in order to prevent damage to roof trim panel.

- Lower the roof trim panel (the roof trim panel will not be removed from the vehicle and the front seats and the front passenger door will not be removed).

Electrostatic discharges can lead to an unintended deployment of the airbag. Therefore, mechanic must electrostatic discharge him-/herself before disconnecting harness connector. This is done, for example, by briefly touching the chassis or door striker pin.

- Disconnect the connector - 4 - from the side curtain airbag - 3 -.

- Disengage the strap - 5 - from the body in - direction of arrow -.

- Open the clips - 1 - and remove the side curtain airbag - 2 - from the body.

- Remove the metal clips - 2 - from the body.






- Remove the bolt - 4 - (4.5 Nm).

• Replace the bolt - 4 -.

- Disengage the bracket - 2 - from the body - 3 - in - direction of arrow -.

- With a second technician, remove the side curtain airbag - 1 - from the vehicle.






Loosen the Clips

- Insert a needle nose pliers - 5 - into the openings - 1 - and - 2 - in the clips - 4 -.

- Carefully close the needle nose pliers - arrows -. This will loosen the retainers - 3 - on the clips - 4 -.

- Remove the clips - 4 - from the body.






Installation

- Install in reverse order of removal.

- Turn on the ignition.

Make sure no one is in the vehicle.

- Connect the battery.
