Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required

Torque wrench (V.A.G 1331)

The following describes removing and installing the left hinge only. Removing and installing the right hinge is identical - only without the gas-filled strut.

Removing






Perform the following:

- Remove the rear lid. Refer to => [ Rear Lid, Removing and Installing ] Rear Lid, Removing and Installing.

- Remove the rear shelf.

- Loosen the luggage compartment side trim panel in the back and fold it away.

- Remove the cable guide and electric wire from the left hinge - 2 -. Refer to => [ Rear Lid Hinge Fasteners Assembly Overview ] Rear Lid Hinge Fasteners Assembly Overview.

- Remove the gas-filled strut - 4 - from the ball stud on the hinge - 2 -. Refer to => [ Gas-Filled Strut Assembly Overview ] Gas-Filled Strut Assembly Overview.

- Disengage the tension spring - 1 - and remove it from the hinge - 2 -.

- Remove the bolts - 3 - and the left hinge - 2 -.

Installation






Install the hinge - 2 - in reverse order of removal. When doing so, note the following:

- Attach the gas-filled strut - 4 - to the ball stud on the hinge - 2 -.

Tightening specification - 3 -: 22 Nm

Perform a function test on the unlocking components before closing the rear lid.
