Cylinder Head Assembly: Adjustments
Valve Timing, Checking
Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
• Camshaft Clamp (T40070)
When doing any repair work, especially in the engine compartment, pay attention to the following due to clearance issues:
• Route lines of all types (for example, fuel, hydraulic, Evaporative Emission (EVAP), coolant, refrigerant, brake fluid and vacuum) and electrical wiring so that the original path is followed.
• To prevent damage to the lines, make sure there is sufficient clearance to all moving or hot components.
- Remove the cylinder head cover. Refer to => [ Cylinder Head Cover ] Cylinder Head Cover.
- Lock the crankshaft in place. Refer to => [ Crankshaft, Locking ] Procedures.
Valve timing is correct:
The valve timing is correct when the bolts for the camshaft clamp (T40070) can be easily installed in the camshafts as shown. The support surfaces of the camshaft clamp (T40070) must lie flat on the camshaft flats when doing this.
- If the bolts are difficult to install, install a 18 or 19 mm open end wrench - A - on the recess on the exhaust camshaft and rotate the camshaft slightly in the - direction of the arrow - to remove any play in the chain drive.
If the bolts for the camshaft clamp (T40070) can now be easily installed with the chain drive tensioned in this manner, the valve timing is correct. Possibly the crankshaft was not secured correctly.
Valve timing is not correct:
The valve timing is not correct when the bolts for the camshaft clamp (T40070) cannot be easily installed to camshafts despite the tension on the chain drive.
• In this case, the valve timing must be adjusted. Refer to => [ Valve Timing, Adjusting ] Adjustments.
Assembly
Assembly is performed in the reverse order of removal. When doing this note the following:
• Remove the locking pin (T40069) from the cylinder block and install the plug (30 Nm).
