Clutch Overview

Clutch Overview

Replace the clutch disc and pressure plate if the rivets are damaged or loose.

Replace the pressure plate and the clutch disc together.

Allocate the clutch disc and pressure plate using the engine code. Refer to the Parts Catalog.

To reduce odor caused by a burnt clutch, thoroughly clean the clutch housing, the flywheel and the side of the engine facing toward the transmission.

Make sure the alignment sleeves for centering the engine/transmission are installed inside the cylinder block. Install them if necessary.

If the alignment sleeves are missing, it will be difficult to shift, there will be clutch problems and the transmission may make noises (loose rattling).

1 Flywheel

Removing and installing.

Make sure it fits securely on the centering pins.

Keep the clutch lining contact surface free of grooves, oil and grease.

2 Clutch Disc

Allocation. Refer to the Parts Catalog.

The spring cage faces the pressure plate.

Centering, refer to => [ Centering the Clutch Disc and Removing, Installing the Pressure Plate ] Clutch.

Lightly grease the splines

Clean the input shaft splines and (on a used clutch disc) the hub splines. Remove any corrosion and apply a very thin coating of grease for clutch plate splines (G 000 100) on the input shaft splines. Then move the clutch disc back and forth on the input shaft until the hub moves freely on the shaft. Remove any excess grease.

3 Pressure Plate

Removing and installing, refer to => [ Centering the Clutch Disc and Removing, Installing the Pressure Plate ] Clutch.

Checking the ends of the diaphragm spring. Refer to => [ Checking the Ends of the Diaphragm Spring ] Clutch.

Checking the spring and rivet connections. Refer to => [ Checking the Spring and Rivet Connections ] Clutch.

The pressure plate is corrosion protected and lubricated. Only the running surfaces may be cleaned, otherwise the service life of the clutch will be shortened considerably.
