Steering Column Switch Components, Removal and Installation Sequence

Always follow the instructions in the Repair Information exactly when disconnecting and connecting the battery. Refer to battery in engine compartment => [ Battery, Disconnecting and Connecting ] Service and Repair or battery in luggage compartment => [ Battery, Disconnecting and Connecting ] Service and Repair.

The shear bolts must be drilled out when removing the entire steering column switch including the steering column switch base carrier and the electronic steering column lock control module (J764). New shear bolts are needed when installing the electronic steering column lock control module (J764).

Also, if only one individual component of steering column switch is removed or replaced, the sequence described in the following must always be adhered to.

• Risk of airbag deployment!

• The airbag unit could deploy if mishandled.

• Read all the Safety Precautions before working on the airbag. Refer to Description and Operation.

Removing

- Disconnect the battery. Refer to battery in engine compartment => [ Battery, Disconnecting and Connecting ] Service and Repair or battery in luggage compartment => [ Battery, Disconnecting and Connecting ] Service and Repair.

- Remove the steering wheel.

- Remove the steering column trim.

Remove the steering column switch components in the following sequence:

• Steering column electronics control module (J527) => [ Steering Column Electronics Control Module (J527), Valeo ] Steering Column Electronics Control Module (J527), Valeo or => [ Steering Column Electronics Control Module (J527), Kostal ] Steering Column Electronics Control Module (J527), Kostal.

• Steering column combination switch (E595) => [ Steering Column Combination Switch (E595), Valeo ] Steering Column Combination Switch (E595), Valeo or => [ Steering Column Combination Switch (E595), Kostal ] Steering Column Combination Switch (E595), Kostal.

• Electronic steering column lock control module (J764) => [ Electronic Steering Column Lock Control Module (J764) ] Electronic Steering Column Lock Control Module (J764).

• Base carrier for steering column switches, refer to => [ Steering Column Switch Base Carrier, Valeo ] Steering Column Switch Base Carrier, Valeo or => [ Steering Column Switch Base Carrier, Kostal ] Steering Column Switch Base Carrier, Kostal.

Installing

Install in reverse order of removal.
