Battery, Disconnecting and Connecting
Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
• Torque Wrench (V.A.G 1331)
• Deactivate the anti-theft alarm system first and then disconnect the battery.
• By removing the battery negative terminal clamp (current disruption), safe work on the electrical system is guaranteed. Disconnecting the battery positive ( B+) terminal must only be performed as required to remove battery from vehicle, and must only be carried out after the negative ( - ) terminal is disconnected. Always follow the instructions for connecting the battery. Refer to => [ Warnings and Safety Precautions ] Service Precautions.
Disconnecting
• Turn off the ignition and all electrical consumers.
• Remove the key.
- Open the cover tab - 1 - of the battery protective covering.
- Loosen the clamp - 1 - and remove the battery ground cable terminal from the battery negative pole.
- Loosen the clamp - 2 - and remove the positive cable from the battery positive pole.
Connecting
Observe the information regarding the threaded connection of the battery terminals. Refer to => [ Battery Post/Terminal ] Battery Post/Terminal
• After connecting the battery and switching the ignition on, the ASR/ESP Control Lamp (K155) lights up continuously. The ASR/ESP Control Lamp goes out automatically if a straight distance is driven at 9 to 13 mph (15 to 20 km/h). This activates the Steering Angle Sensor (G85).
- Attach the positive cable to the battery positive terminal and tighten the clamp - 2 - to the tightening specification given in the overview. Refer to => [ Battery Overview ] Battery Overview.
- Attach the ground cable to the battery negative terminal and tighten the clamp - 1 - to the tightening specification given in the overview. Refer to => [ Battery Overview ] Battery Overview.
- Close the cover - 1 - on the battery jacket.
- After connection, perform the work steps listed in the table.
