Compression Check: Testing and Inspection
Compression, Checking
Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
• Spark Plug Removal Tool (3122 B)
• Compression Tester (V.A.G 1763)
Requirements:
• Engine oil temperature at least 30 °C (86 °F).
• Battery voltage is at least 12.5 volts.
Procedure
- Remove all the ignition coils. Refer to => [ Ignition Coil with Power Output Stage ] Service and Repair.
- Disconnect the left and right fuel injector connectors - 1 - on the back of the cylinder head.
• Ignore - 2 and 3 -.
- Remove the spark plugs using the spark plug removal tool (3122 B).
- Check the compression pressure using the compression tester (V.A.G 1763).
• Using the tester, refer to the operating instructions.
- Have a second mechanic press the accelerator pedal down all the way while operating the starter until the pressure increase is no longer displayed on the tester.
- Repeat the procedure for each cylinder.
Installation is carried out in the reverse order while noting the following:
- Install the spark plugs and ignition coils. Refer to => [ Ignition Coil with Power Output Stage ] Service and Repair.
- If the connectors were disconnected and the engine was started, then malfunctions have been stored in the Engine Control Module (ECM) Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) memory. Refer to Generate readiness code in Guided Functions in the vehicle diagnostic tester.
