Cylinder Head Overview






Cylinder Head Overview

To remove the cylinder head the engine must first be removed. Refer to => [ Engine, Removing ] Engine, Removing.

When installing a replacement cylinder head, all of the contact surfaces between the hydraulic lash adjusters, roller rocker levers and cam running surfaces on the camshaft must be lubricated before installing the cylinder head cover.

The plastic protectors installed to protect the open valves must only be removed immediately before installing the cylinder head.

Whenever replacing the cylinder head or cylinder head gasket, the coolant must be completely replaced.






1 Cap

Replace the seal if damaged.

2 Cylinder Head Cover

Removing and installing, refer to => [ Cylinder Head Cover ] Service and Repair.

3 Bolt

10 Nm

With a spacer sleeve and seal.

Replace the seal if damaged.

4 Lifting Eye

5 Bolt

23 Nm

6 Intake Manifold Support

7 Bolt

23 Nm

8 Bolt

10 Nm

9 Water Connection

10 Gasket

Always replace.

Note the installed position.

11 Chain Tensioner

50 Nm

For the camshaft timing chain.

Only rotate the engine with the chain tensioner installed.

12 Seal

Always replace.

13 Seal

For the camshaft adjustment valve 1 and the exhaust camshaft adjustment valve 1.

Replace if damaged or leaking.

Installing, refer to => [ Cover Seal, Installing ] Service and Repair.

14 Cover

Can be removed and installed with the engine installed.

Lubricate the sealing surfaces with silicone adhesive sealant (D 176 501 A1).

18 Guide Rail

For the camshaft timing chain.

19 Bolt

23 Nm

Install using liquid locking fluid (D 000 600 A2)

20 Water Connection

Bolts to the front of the cylinder head.

Can be replaced only when the transmission is removed.

21 O-ring

Always replace.

22 Seal

Always replace.

23 Cylinder Head Gasket

Made of metal

Always replace.

Replacing the cylinder head gasket, refer to => [ Cylinder Head ] Cylinder Head.

After replacing, replace the entire amount of coolant.

24 Cylinder Head

Checking for distortion, refer to => [ Checking the Cylinder Head for Distortion ].

Removing and installing, refer to => [ Cylinder Head ] Cylinder Head.

After replacing, replace the entire amount of coolant.

25 Belt Tensioner

For the ribbed belt.

Removing and installing the ribbed belt. Refer to => [ Ribbed Belt ] Service and Repair.

26 Bolt

Always replace.

Before installing, lubricate the bolts with liquid locking fluid (D 197 300 A2). Refer to => [ Apply to each cylinder head bolt in the head contact surface area and install the bolts. ] Cylinder Head.

Observe the installation instructions and the sequence for loosening and tightening. Refer to => [ Cylinder Head ] Cylinder Head.

27 Cylinder Head Cover Gasket

Replace if the damaged or leaking.

Note the installed position.

Feeler Gauge

Max. permissible distortion: 0.05 mm (0.002 inch)
