Timing Chain, Oil Pump

Timing Chain, Oil Pump

This procedure is only possible when the engine is removed from the engine compartment!

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required

Camshaft Bar (T10068 A)

Counterhold Tool (T10172)

Torque Wrench (5-50 Nm) (V.A.G 1331)

Torque Wrench (40-200 Nm) (V.A.G 1332)

Adjustment Tool (T10363)

Silicone Adhesive Sealant (D 176 501 A1)

Requirements

The engine is removed

The engine and transmission are separated

The drive plate is removed

The oil pan is removed

The sealing flange is removed

Removing

- Loosen the sprocket bolt - arrow - approximately 1 turn. Counter hold the vibration damper using the counterhold tool (T10172) when doing so.

- Rotate the engine using the vibration damper bolt to the adjusting marks.

The milled drive chain sprocket tooth must align with the bearing cap joint - arrow A -.

The marked hole - arrow B - must be aligned with the mark on the oil pump.

This position is reached at every fourth turn.

- If the camshaft timing chain needs to be replaced, remove the camshaft timing chain. Refer to => [ Timing Chain, Camshaft ] Timing Chain, Camshaft.

- If the camshaft timing chain is not replaced, mark the position of the timing chain to the oil pump chain sprockets with a water resistant marker.

- Remove the chain tensioner - arrow -.

- Secure the chain tensioner with a 3 mm hex wrench - A -.

- Remove the chain tensioner with tensioning rail bolts - arrows -.

- Remove the chain sprocket bolt and then remove the chain sprocket and timing chain from the oil pump.

Installing

- Position the crankshaft at Top Dead Center (TDC).

The milled drive chain sprocket tooth - arrow - must align with the bearing cap joint.

- Rotate the oil pump shaft - 1 - until the flat side - arrow - is horizontal to the mark - 2 - on the oil pump.

- Initially only install the rear chain on the large chain sprocket. Observe the previously made marks.

- Place the chain on the crankshaft and place the chain sprocket on the oil pump shaft. The marked hole - arrow B - must be aligned with the mark on the oil pump.

- If the chain sprocket cannot be installed, rotate the oil pump shaft slightly.

- If the camshaft timing chain was not removed, carefully remove the chain sprocket from the oil pump and tilt it slightly upward. Install the camshaft timing chain in this position. The marks made during removal must align.

- Reinstall the chain sprocket on the oil pump shaft and tighten by hand.

- Install the chain tensioner - arrow -.

- Install the chain tensioner with tensioning rail and tighten the bolts - arrows - to 8 Nm.

- Remove the hex wrench - A -.

- Tighten the chain sprockets bolts to 60 Nm + an additional 90° (1/4) turn. Counter hold at the vibration damper using the counterhold tool (T10172) when doing so.

- Install the sealing flange. Refer to => [ Installing ] Sealing Flange, Transmission Side.

Further installation is performed in the reverse order of removal.

- If the camshaft timing chain was removed, install the camshaft timing chain. Refer to => [ Installing ] Timing Chain, Camshaft.
